the department for the regulation and control of magical creatures gives classifications to all known beasts, beings and spirits. these offer an at-a-glance guide to the perceived dangerousness of the creature. the five categories are as follows:
in some cases an explanation for the classification of a particular beast is necessary and footnotes have been added accordingly.

1 this creature is not unduly aggresive but it should be treated with great respect. 2 this creature is not aggressive but very few wizards have ever succeeded in domesticating it. 3 this creature is not dangerous but there are severe penalties attached to its capture or injury. 4 this classification refers to the werewolf in its transformed state.
