why couldn't there be a bunch of underage wizards running around performing magic in front of muggles? sure, the ministress for magic was certainly pleased that things were running so smoothly, or appeared so at the very least, and the same seemed to ring true for the majority of the ministry. as for sarah, she just found it plain boring. there was very little for her to do in terms of modifying people's memories, and considering that was what her job was all about, it was rather disappointing. now, if the said wizards had been doing the said thing, then that would have given her plenty to be getting on with, because if there was one thing that sarah hated it was sitting around waiting for something interesting to happen.
knockturn alley wasn't the most pleasant place in the world, even sarah had to admit that, and she figured it had something to do with the lighting. even outside, it's was pretty dim, even during the day, though she could hardly blame it on the lighting at this precise moment in time, it was almost seven in the evening. you couldn't tell if shops were open or not since very few of them had lights on at any point in the day, and people had a habit of just walking in and out of shops all through the day, open or closed. some of them worked in the shops, whilst others didn't, but nobody thought anything of it. there was one place that sarah was looking for, and she knew it was open.
sarah made her way to her usual table, taking a menu from another table as she passed it, watching the waiters and waitresses hurry around at her arrival from the corner of her eye, her lips pulling into a smirk as she sat down. she didn't need the menu, she knew what they offered and how much each item was, and as far as she was aware, she had only eaten five different meals, despite having eaten there many more times than that. she heard someone sit down on the chair opposite her, and whoever it was had some serious nerve, or else they knew her, and even then they had to have quite a bit of nerve. she would ignore them for the time being. if they spoke to her, she would reply, but she wouldn't be making any effort to start a conversation, that was for sure.
normally she would have reserved a table at the restaurant before turning up, but right now, she couldn't be bothered, and there was no need to anyway. she always took the same table, and they made sure it was always empty just in case she turned up. even if her grandmother had died quite some time ago, those two syllables still held a fair amount of intimidation. pushing the door open, she was glad to hear that it wasn't overly noisy, but not silent either. it wasn't brilliantly lit, but there was lighting placed strategically throughout the room so that one could see well enough.

you should have known the price of evil And it hurts to know that you belong here, yeah No one to call Jon took a stroll down knockturn alley like he owned the entire alley, and in his opinion he may as well be the owner because nobody around there were worth a single sickle if they were compared to Jonathan. He was used to these kind of dirty scummy places, he spent many a day following his father around knockturn alley as a boy and even though they had a lot of money and could hang out with some of the richest people like the malfoys his Father always hung around with people that were his lessors, it was only years later he realised it was because his father had a power over them and they were scared of him. That was around the time Jon decided he wanted to be just like his father.. well.. that didnt exactly happen but he still liked hanging around Knockturn Alley with people he would class as lesser people.
Then somebody caught his eye, a woman that he actually considered one of his equals, only because of her last name though she had much to prove if she wanted to stay up in his good books. He smirked to himself and thought Sarah Lestrange he was very good at remembering names and faces which helped with his Headmaster position. Putting on his charming smile/smirk he headed over to her and sat himself down opposite her. At that point she had a menu covering her face so she couldnt exactly see him. Picking up a menu himself he opened it and held it up in front of his face "Sarah Lestrange" he whispered to her, it wasnt one of those quiet whispers but it was about the same as if he spoke to her.. he just wanted to know if she could guess who he was just by his whispering of her name. Kudos to her if she could. Everybody to fear. the most annoying place about this restaurant was the limited choice in things to drink. sarah steered clear of firewhiskey whenever she could, and butterbeer was far too common for someone of her standard to be seen drinking. no, she wanted something sophisticated, something that people of lower classes, as much as people liked to think that there weren't social ranks nowadays, wouldn't be able to afford to drink, something that she'd actually be able to buy in this godforsaken alley, or even the one neighbouring it. apparently elderflower wine would just have to do for now.
the person who sat opposite her was definitely a man, as sarah could tell from the underlying smell. whether it was sweat or deodorant, she couldn't say, she wasn't exactly the type to go around sniffing the armpits of every male she passed. then again, there were the smells from the kitchen too, so that would have made it complicated too. whatever the justification, it was irrelevant. no woman had a voice like the one that spoke to her after a few moments, and the headmaster of hogwarts definitely wasn't a woman either. "jonathan styx, what a surprise. to what do i owe the pleasure?"

you should have known the price of evil And it hurts to know that you belong here, yeah No one to call Jonathan was actually examining the menu, not just holding it in front of his face, the restaurant seemed to do some decent food, obviously he wouldnt know if it was any good unless he at least saw it but it sounded good, the drinks section was appalling though No no no a restaurant should at least have five different wines Jon thought to himself, his mother had taught him all the tricks of the trade when it came to cuisine and he was fairly good at picking out a bottle of wine that would go well with a meal. His father had taught him business and being a gentleman to the ladies and how to be as slick and as sly as anyone else and his mother had pretty much taught him everything else he needed in life, well not everything Hogwarts taught him a lot as well.
A grin formed on his face as he heard her say his name, she was deffinetly one of his favourite people now, not that it was much of an achievement as he tended to look down on everyone. "Well you got my name from just my voice and your beautiful and on top of that your alone.. what else could a guy possibly want?" he said with a grin putting his menu down on the table, if she was going to have something so would he, he'd already decided what he would have if she had something anyway. "so.. what's a girl of your class doing in a hole like this?" he asked curiously, she didnt exactly suit the dirty and dark alley, he could see her dining with lords not at some crummy restaurant with a shabby menu that had nearly nothing decent to drink. Everybody to fear. Wearing: Outfit Comment: fair enough. Lyrics:Nightmare - Avenged Sevenfold Credit: Me

sarah would have liked to meet her grandmother, and she was certain that her mother would have liked to as well. it wasn't as though we never saw her or heard about what she'd been up to, it was printed all over the daily prophet almost every day for the few years leading up to her demise. okay, so maybe she wasn't the most pleasant of people, and both sarah and callidora would regret ever having wanted to meet her once they had done so, but sarah couldn't help but wish that they had, even if only once, because now there was no way to go about doing so. there was a lot she could have learnt from bellatrix, a hell of a lot.
"your voice is heardly unique jon. it's my job to be able to distinguish voices or i'd end up wiping the wrong memories." it was a lot more complicated that just picking out a voice in their mind and pulling it away, much more complicated, but that was the basic principle to it. that was why it made it so difficult to prevent muggles from witnessing the magic world in public places. there were the crowds, which made finding the right voice a lot more difficult, and then you had to modify the memory of all of those different people. "alcohol, sex, money, food, drugs, tobacco, there's a lot of things a guy could possibly want. never satisfied." was that the reason she was still single? she doubted it was the only reason, but it was certainly one of them.
yes, it certainly was a hole, there were far better places to dine, but they were in more popular locations. diagon alley, hogsmeade, london. the latter would have prevented her using her wand, and the others were too popular. she was independent for the most part, sarah couldn't stand crowds. this excuse for a restaurant was similar to the hog's head in hogsmeade - it wasn't the most popular, but people didn't expect you to be there, and thus you got your solitude. "a lot of people want to speak to me, and they won't think to look here. it's convenient. may i pose the same question to you?"

you should have known the price of evil And it hurts to know that you belong here, yeah No one to call The only family Jon ever knew was his parents, he didnt know what had happend to his grandparents or even if he had cousins heck some other people in the alley may even be related to him. Although he doubted it, he was as far as the world was concerned the last Styx, unless obviously he managed to have children but he didnt think that would ever happen as much as he would love to carry on the name, he hated children, annoying brats that they were.. which is an unusual thing for a Headmaster to think but he was hardly your typical headmaster. He also never thought he would let a woman get that emotionally close to him for them both to decide to have children. To him he was sure it was never going to happen.
"I think I'm going to take that as a backhanded complement and add that i think you have a very difficult job but honestly try being around a bunch of brats all day every day and having to not kill a single one of them" Jon said, the corner of his mouth curving upwards slightly. It was harder then it sounded to not just hit kids around the back of the head for being annoying like his father would do to him in his childhood, it had made him a better man so why shouldn't it happen to the kids of today, they'd end up better for it. "Your right about all of those things.. except drugs i havent been high in years" he said truthfully, he'd used drugs before, they were over-rated in his opinion. "Oh Sarah I'm sure you could satisfy any man" he said with wink, it was one of those comments that sounded like a compliment but the more you thought about it the more unsure whether it was.. but that was the closest she was going to get to a compliment for now.
"By telling me that your telling me where to look if i want to speak to you" he pointed out, was that wise of her because now she would probably have to find some new place to get away from people. "You may, the answer being that i spent many a day here as a boy with my father and i actually like the place, i like the sense of power i have when i look around at all the wizards in there tatty clothes and i know I'm better then all of them" Jonathan stated, it was the truth and he wasnt afraid to share that kind of thing with Sarah as she was the type of person who probably felt the same thing when she looked at someone sitting in the dirt begging. "you're the headmaster of hogwarts school of witchcraft and wizardry, if you want to kill one then you're more than entitled to. sure, there might be the odd person that gets annoyed, but you seem to get a thrill from that kind of thing." to be completely honest, sarah didn't know jonathan all that well, and so she could only guess that he would enjoy annoying and/or killing people, he was in the nex domino after all. then again, so was she, and killing wasn't exactly one of her hobbies, nor being annoying. awkward, yes, but not annoying. saying that, she was in the order too, so that just complicated things. for everyone else anyway, she found little trouble in the situation. as far as she was concerned, she was neutral, just supplying both sides with the information they want.
"i'm yet to find someone that i'm willing to satisfy, apparently my expectations are a little too high to be realistic." sarah would have made a retort to him admitting to all things but one on her list, though being unable to think of an immediate one, she decided to let it drop instead, as reluctant as she was to do so. "indeed, but i'm sure you're smart enough to know that if i want to talk to you, i'll come and find you." hogwarts was easy to get to, and it wouldn't take much to get jon to let her in. if that failed, there were plenty of other professors that could do so. if she couldn't persuade a member of the nex domino, then she'd ask a member of the order of the phoenix, it was as simple as that. "i suppose that makes sense coming from a man of your class."

you should have known the price of evil And it hurts to know that you belong here, yeah No one to call Jon actually laughed at what Sarah had to say, it wasnt a happy or cheerful laugh, just a laugh.. an emotionless laugh and sure it probably wasnt intended as something he should laugh at but he did and didnt care. "As appealing as that is to think about, i dont believe i could end the life of a child" Jonathan admitted, he himself hadn't always been so twisted, in fact when he was younger he would spend a lot of time in his room playing around and laughing, untill his dad would probably tell him to shut up and keep the noise to a minimum. He knew people could change and he was sure a lot of those annoying brats might actually grow up to be great men and women but most of them he had little hope for.
"Well, when you find this perfect man i would be delighted in meeting him" he said, obviously he couldnt care if she did find some man that was perfect for her he was just being a gentleman. The corner of his mouth lifted slightly at the next thing she said "Well your welcome any time, its been a long time since i had a little female company, i wouldnt count this though, as this is hardly a place suited for a real conversation" he said with a nod. "Is that a compliment?" he asked referring to her mentioning his class, smirking and raising an eyebrow, maybe he was just fishing for compliments or maybe he just liked playing around but he did believe that both her and himself were a higher class then anyone lurking around Knockturn Alley. "some of them are of age jonathan, or at least not far off. if they're not capable of defending themselves when their life depends on it, they'll have no useful contribution to society." some of her opinions were a little blunt, but who was anyone else to judge her on them? they had their views on things just the same as she did, and if they were free to voice them then so would she, regardless of the view itself. "have you managed to sort out the rebels that call themselves malfoy's army yet?" exactly why they were trying to get their original headmistress back, she didn't know, the letter had been rather convincing, to some people at least. a lot of the staff seemed to be fooled, and even some members of the order, but there were others that knew the nex domino's involvement in her absence.
"so long as you're not a bad influence on him you're more than welcome to." relationships weren't exactly her thing, she never had been the type to try and settle down, but then why should she? sarah was only twenty-nine, why bother with all that maturity nonsense when she had a great deal of her life ahead of her to do such things. for the time being she was more than happy to send mixed messages and lead people on. they knew full well she wouldn't be interested in them for long, or even at all, but they just couldn't keep their eyes to themself, and on the odd occasion their hands, as fun as it was to strike people around the face. "i thought you liked this place, what with the 'sense of power' as you put it." it wasn't completely relevant to what he had said, but their was a small part that applied to it. sitting in a sewer might not be a place suited to a real conversation, but there was certainly less chance of anyone except a rat overhearing. "i don't offer compliments, you of all people should know that by now."

you should have known the price of evil And it hurts to know that you belong here, yeah No one to call Jonathan knew she was right and the only thing he could come up with was "Yeah.. but it would cause catastrophe that we dont want caused.. yet" that sounded like a great excuse not to hurt a student but the truth was maybe he was going a little bit soft, sure he still got annoyed a lot at them but the Stygian Votaries.. well he kind of liked them. Jon frowned slightly at the malfoys army question "Nope.. there either very organised.. or completely unorganised its impossible to tell them apart from normal students" he didnt think they would be that much of a problem though, he didnt think the students could do anything that would ruin any plans.
"well.. you know me Sarah, I'm a bad influence to all" he said with a little smirk, sure he'd convinced men to gamble, teenagers to get drunk, women to cheat and little kids to fight, he wasnt exactly sure why people would listen to his advice but he was rather amused at the fact they did as he never gave decent advice and was always entertained by the events that followed. "Oh don't get me wrong this place is amazing if you want that sense of power, but as far as speaking privately goes, the walls have ears that will happily tell anyone anything for a price" Jon said, he knew the kind of low-life scum that lurked around and they were not trustworthy at all. "Well that sure sounded like a compliment to me" he said with a grin "but if it wasnt meant to be one maybe your subconsciously complimenting me.. which will only arouse my curious nature" he was just messing around with her he didnt think she was complimenting him subconsciously, he didnt even imagine she could like someone truly, there were just people she didnt dislike more then others.. at least that was how Jon saw people and he figured she was something similar. 'well as soon as the order pull their socks up and get on with sorting out the nex domino leader, yet will be a whole lot nearer.' that wasn't the sort of thing she'd tell jon though, that would ruin everything. she hadn't told the order that the nex domino planned to take hermione, and so that treatment would be applied to this situation too. "then perhaps you need to take the initiative and do something that makes 'nex domino' more than just a name." students couldn't be organised enough to avoid being noticed by both the headmaster and another group of students, and she had to give them the credit that they couldn't be that unorganised.
"your 'stygian votaries' are a waste of time then, or else they're not trying hard enough. maybe it's you that's not trying hard enough. if you want the school to respect you, you've got to show them that you're the headmaster now, not hermione." would it work? probably not, but it was worth a try at the very least. you could hardly say that a method wouldn't work until you've given it a shot, no matter how unlikely it is, within reason of course. sarah gave a mental laugh as jon mentioned the walls having ears and telling anyone anything for a price. did he know that was what she did? of course he did, he was one of the higher members of the nex domino. he must have been aware that she was a member of the order of the phoenix so she could get information and sell it to their opposition. what they didn't know was that she offered the same service to the order, and she didn't intend for them to find out. the income was rather favourable.
"i was simply stating the facts jonathan, i'd be a fool to deny that you're of a higher class than the majority of the wizarding world, and seeing as i'm not a fool, i won't deny it." it was a valid jusification, in her opinion anyway, and if it was good enough for her then it should be good enough for him. she wouldn't have placed herself above him in social class, her occupation wasn't quite as influential but still held a considerable amount of respect, but she wasn't that far below.

you should have known the price of evil And it hurts to know that you belong here, yeah No one to call Jon tilted his head to the side slightly "And why exactly do you suggest I do something, your in the nex domino too, I'm just another follower.. heck i didnt even choose to be headmaster of Hogwarts" he said he didnt think it was up to him to do something, it was up to whoever the heck was in charge and recently knowing who was in charge was getting confusing, he was fairly sure he knew who it was but it got confusing at times. He still wasnt even sure why they had sent him to be Headmaster of Hogwarts, he couldnt exactly see what was so great in having that job.
Now Jon didnt like people telling him it was he who wasnt trying hard enough as much as the next person, most likely even more, but sadly in this case he had to admit she had a point, he hadn't actually done anything to make the pupils see him as a real headmaster. "Hmm.. I'll think about it" he told her, he'd have to put on a ball or something, he could handle one night mingling with students.. maybe he'd make it masquerade so he could sneak away easier. "You just cant allow one tinsy tiny compliment can you?" he said with a smirk, he didnt mind to be honest he was just teasing her. "So.. any news on the order?" Everybody to fear. "we'd live in a boring world if everyone practiced what they preached, and as a woman who despises being bored, i daresay i shalln't be following my advice." there was also the added fact that despite popular belief, she didn't completely believe herself to be a member of the nex domino, or the order of the phoenix either for that matter. she sought out and provided the necessary information to complete an objective, and the other members could do the completion part. she didn't show favour to either side, and sparking off the fight between the two of them would bring her into questioning about where her loyalties were.
"you don't expect to actually get a say, do you?" sarah asked with a frown, moving her hand to where her drink usually was, only to remember she hadn't actually ordered one yet. she wasn't thirsty, but it gave her hands something to do. that had been the worst thing about hogwarts, walking around in the corridors. what were you supposed to do with your hands. only boys seemed to put their hands in their pockets, and it just felt awkward to walk with them by your sides. she'd taken to rubbing her wrist a lot, which had sometimes resulted in them being a tad sore at times, but nothing too uncomfortable.
"no, compliments aren't my style, regardless of the situation." sarah could manage a compliment if she wanted to, but the main criteria was that she wanted to, which wasn't very often to be realistic about the whole thing. "they're lost without malfoy, that's for certain. organisation is terrible at the moment, almost anyone could get in they're that desperate for members. i doubt they'll be much of a problem for quite some time yet." was it true? yes, partially, but there were some people they need to keep an eye on, such as thedore lupin, victoire weasley, gwendolyn potter. they were all young and more than capable with their wands, and with their heritage it was no surprise.
