Two years ago, Lissa Dragomir and her best friend, Rosemarie Hathaway convinced Victor Dashkov to tell them where his half brother, Robert Duru was, convinced that he could help them save Dimitri. Through a lot of persuation and pleading, Robert divulged his secrets, making them promise never to tell anyone of his secret. Dimitri was restored to his Dhampir life, enduring a somewhat painful transition back into the world of the living. He's struggling with thinking back on the lives he ended as a Strigoi, while Rose has had to deal with the shame that calling on Victor Dashkov has brought on her and her Mother.
But Rose Hathaway is the least of anyone's worries right now, whether she played a part in freeing Victor Dashkov or not. The Strigoi, instead of depleting numbers, seem to be growing. New-born's are showing up all over the place and even though the debate between letting the Moroi fight and not letting them fight is still raging, many Moroi have joined the cause and are learning without consent. News of the first Strigoi attacks surfaced eight months ago when two schools of Moroi and Dhampir's were practically destroyed, leaving barely a dozen survivors between them. The rest of the staff were turned or killed, adding to their numbers. Some schools upped their defenses, but separately, they weren't nearly enough. Now, everyone is beginning to realize that the only way to save themselves and have any chance of surviving is to band together.
A lot of schools have combined forces and others are sending survivors to St. Vladimirs, one of the most protected schools in the country. It's never had so many defenses before, but still, people are wondering whether it will be enough against the rising Strigoi threat. No Dhampir can be spared to protect the Moroi, Rose Hathaway included, and along with her new guard and best friend, Lissa Dragomir, Christian Ozera, Dimitri Belikov and Adrian Ivashkov, she has returned to St. Vladimir's to defend.
