Dean Winchester has been dragged out of Hell into a very different world: during the four months that he was gone, Lilith has unleashed the deadly, demonic Croatoan virus. It's already overtaken half of the US and it's spreading fast. Hunters are the only ones who can educate the population against it, but they're dying off quicker than they can be replaced.
The outbreak's point of origin? New Harmony, Indiana. Dean's grave site. Lilith has a pretty sick sense of humor.
Only one man is known to be immune. Sam Winchester. And due to this immunity his fellow hunters have persecuted him, wrongly believing him to be the source of the virus, the cause of this madness. He's on the run, daring to trust only Bobby, Ruby and the Harvelles, trying desperately to find a cure and a way to save his brother with little hope for the future of humanity.
As Dean soon learns from the angel Castiel, the virus is born of the blood of Lucifer. The only way to rid the world of its evil influence is to break the sixty-six seals trapping Lucifer in Hell. Once he's free he can be killed, and the virus will die with him.
But how do they locate the seals? And how in the hell do they kill Lucifer?
The Winchesters are going to need an inside man in Lilith's army and a little help from the prophet Chuck.
