stones taught me to fly, love taught me to lie LIFE TAUGHT ME TO DIE, SO IT'S NOT HARD TO FALL WHEN YOU FLOAT LIKE A CANNONBALL• • • • • • • • • • • • • • • • • • • • • • • • • • • • • • • • • • • • • • • • • • • • • At Eighteen years old, he'd never expected to see the body of another guy, much less see it being cradled in the arms of his cousin, like this boy was gold. He'd known about Sam, but only by chance had he heard of him. He'd seen him once or twice in Honeydukes, and he'd always stopped and chatted with Josh, especially after he started dating Evie. It was clear to Josh that she cared quite a lot for this guy, and he loved her as well, Josh could tell that much. He'd been trying to tune in the radio in his bedroom when the doorbell rang, so he could barely hear it, and then the shouting was droned out too. He'd just gotten signal on it when he heard a terrifying scream, and he'd thought for a second that he'd done something to make the radio make that noise, and then he realised that it was coming from downstairs. He was frozen, and it took him a good few minutes to get up from the bed, let alone down the stairs and into the hallway. And there it was, the most horrifying sight that he had ever seen. Samuel Charles Cooper, being cradled in the arms of his cousin whilst she wept, and he bled. Bled. That wasn't right. Everything was hazy after that, like his brain was trying to stop him from remembering. Thank Merlin. He never wanted to think of it again. But even worse, it had torn Evie apart.
Josh never wanted to see her like that again either, and so he'd spent the last hour or two of this day, making sure that there wasn't a speck of blood left on the floor of the entrance hall. It didn't matter, she'd probably see it imposed on the floor from her memory. He did. Next stop for Josh was the bathroom. It was the day after he'd died, and Josh was still seeing him there. Like a ghost. After emptying the contents of his stomach into the toilet bowl, he wiped his mouth and moved to the sink, flushing everything away. He was Joshua Dalton, the eldest male of the children, and he had to be strong for everyone. That was hard to do. He leant over the sink and brushed his teeth vigourously, before putting his toothbrush back, and then scrubbing his hands until they were red. He felt as if the blood was still there, from when he'd tried to coax Evie away. It was terrifying to think that the lively guy he'd once talked to was gone. He'd asked him for advice on what chocolates to get Jaslene once, and now he was gone. No one expected it, but the children were gaining a good idea why, and who was behind it. He didn't want to believe it, and neither it seemed, did Evie, but it wasn't as if she'd be happy to jump into a 'who did it' conversation when her boyfriend was killed yesterday, and his body dropped right into her arms.
Josh walked through to his bedroom, and then perched himself on the end of his bed. He hung his head in his hands, and closed his eyes, just hoping that he'd actually get some more sleep tonight. He'd woken up a few times in the night. He didn't know why he was so bothered, but the fact was that it was a decent, innocent bloke, and he was killed right on their doorstep. Josh had talked to him, laughed with him, asked his advice, and now he was dead and Evie was heartbroken, and he'd helped clean up the rest of the blood. He let out a sob, just one, but he held back another in as he heard the floorboards creak, and then some noise coming from down the hall, and he looked up, wondering what it was.

Isabella walked up the stairs, each foot landing on a step slowly. Her eyes looked dazed and it made her look like she wasn’t even in her own mind. It was like she was moving without knowing it. Kind of like sleep walking. Why was she in this state of mind? Well that was an easy question. She had just found out that her aunt and uncle had indeed set up the death of her friend, Evie’s boyfriend, Sam. They didn’t murder him exactly. The catch was, it was her headmaster from Hogwarts and some woman by the name of Sarah Lestrange who actually came to their house and murdered him right on their doorstep. Images flashed through her mind of how the scene went down. She wasn’t there, but there was a pretty clear picture of what happened. She could see Sam coming to the house and then one of the two probably casting one of the unforgivable spells. Avada Kadavra, she thought it was. Then Evie answering the door after the two split and Sam’s body falling on her. This ran through her mind thousands of times as she made her way up the stairs. Each time cut deeper and deeper into her heart, soon making tears fall out of her eyes and down her cheeks.
It hurt worse knowing Sam would never be there. She could never talk to him again. She could never see his crazy grin again, unless she looked at pictures. But that wasn’t enough. She was angry and the worst part was because of his death and the fact that now she knew who did it, all she could think about was revenge and hurting someone. She wanted to make them feel the same pain Sam did. She wanted to see them suffer like him and Eve and everyone else that was close to him. Because now, he could not keep the promises he made or be with the people he loved. He promised to look after her. He said he would punch Bryon Nott for her and that if he did anything, he would protect her. Sam had become another brother to her, and now he was gone. Not only that, he left her cousin. Evie was in love with him and she never had the chance to tell him. She was heartbroken and that could never be fixed. She would probably never love someone as much as she loved him.
Isabella’s foot finally reached the top of the stairs where the hallway consisting of all the rooms were located. She slugged forward, slowly making her way to her room. When she arrived at the door, her hand crept around the doorknob and pushed the door open. She stood in the doorway for a moment and looked around. Her breathing started to pick up as she started to become even more angry than what she had been. She could feel her heart become heavy. She could feel the heat rising in her cheeks. She could feel the tears rising in her eyes and flowing down, quicker than what they had before. Then, she snapped.
She didn’t know what she was doing. She wasn’t thinking at all about what actions she was taking. She starting throwing things, and breaking them. She stomped across her room and flipped over her nightstand and then grabbed a lamp and threw across the room to hit the wall. She didn’t even watch it break, she just continued to the next thing. She started ripping things out of her closet and throwing them on the floor. She did the same to her clothes that were in her dresser drawers. Everything was going everywhere, which was abnormal for her, because she had always been a neat freak. Her room was always in perfect condition. Now it wasn’t. She stumbled over to her vanity and looked into the mirror, her face stricken with horror. She couldn’t believe that they were the ones who did it. She wanted to think it was someone else, but their accusations were correct. It was their aunt and uncle, and she wanted them to pay. She wanted them to die. She hated them. Never had she felt like this before. She always tried to suppress hate she felt for other people, but this time she wouldn’t. She would shout to the world she hated them. She would tell them to their faces. She was not afraid. The next thing she knew she was crying out in pain because she had punched the mirror in front of her and broken it. She toppled backwards, holding her hand as she balled up and let the blood run out. The whole time she laid there, she cried.

stones taught me to fly, love taught me to lie LIFE TAUGHT ME TO DIE, SO IT'S NOT HARD TO FALL WHEN YOU FLOAT LIKE A CANNONBALL• • • • • • • • • • • • • • • • • • • • • • • • • • • • • • • • • • • • • • • • • • • • • Joshua tried his best to remember the boy who had perished on their doorstep. No, not just on their doorstep, but right under their noses. He must have been dying when Josh was sat inside thinking about Jaslene and his wedding. When Evie was thinking about Sam. When Izzy was thinking about school or Byron or whatever it was that she was thinking about. His death, it had changed everything. He'd known that the adults were capable of terrible things, he'd been on the wrong end of the wand so many times in the past that he knew what they were capable of. The cruciatus curse wasn't particularly pleasant, and it wasn't easy, but he'd kept every single secret that had been entrusted to him, from Harrison's sexuality to the things that Bethany had gotten up to. Granted, he'd played a part in a few of the unruly things too, so it was his secret as much as hers, but he kept secrets for every Dalton, and he planned on it remaining that way. No matter what pain he was put through, he'd never give up the secrets, because he wouldn't let his siblings be hurt. He knew that he wasn't the only one who'd faced the brunt of this, as Bethany too had been treated the same. He preyed that they never touched Isabella or Gareth, because if they tried to hurt his younger siblings, well, he was pretty much ready to kill them. But no matter what pain they'd put him through, it was probably nothing compared to what Evie was feeling right now, or Izzy, either.
Josh had only seen the boy, he was trying not to think his name, but he felt guilty about that at the same time. Sam. Sam. He'd only seen Sam a few times when he'd been in Honeydukes buying chocolate, or stopping in the Three broomsticks for a drink after work, but he seemed nice enough. Of course Josh got a slight grudge against him when he found out that he was Evie's boyfriend, but that was Josh's protective side coming through, as he'd always thought of Evie as the innocent one, and this boy looked like he would corrupt her or hurt her or something, and he didn't want to see Evie hurt. But then as it turned out, the Sam didn't hurt her, just losing him did. It was tearing her apart, you could tell when you looked in her eyes. Josh would feel the same if he'd lost Jaslene too. He'd be inconsolable. He'd heard Evie's screams through the house, and he'd immediately went to see what was going on. He'd seen her sobbing and holding him, and Josh had never seen Evie cry, so he was gob smacked. It had taken him a good few minutes to work out what was going on. It was like he couldn't think. There was this boy, bleeding all over the floor, and his own brain wasn't working. It was like he couldn't comprehend it. Or, he didn't want to. Death was something that Joshua Dalton hadn't really seen, and yet, here was this shell of a man, being cradled by his cousin, whilst he bled all over her shirt and the floor and about everywhere else the blood could reach. It was this scene that Joshua had revisited in his mind, over and over and over, and he'd had to stop himself being consumed by it. How was Evie holding it together as well as she was?
And then there were thoughts that Josh had, like, Sam would never get those choclates down from the top shelf again, for Josh to give to Jas. (or at least, try to give to Jas, but no promises, because Honeydukes chocolates were the best around, and they were just too damned tempting.) He'd never see Sam smiling as he ordered a drink in the Three Broomsticks. Merlin, it was starting to sound like he was in love with him! But he'd still expect it. Sam walking through the door. He'd even bought Josh a drink once, knowing he was a Dalton. He really wasn't that bad a guy, and maybe Josh had been a little judgemental and hard on him. He wished he hadn't. They could have been friends. It was probably better that they weren't, however, because he'd be even worse than he was now, and someone needed to be strong for them. As the eldest of the Dalton children, he felt the need to be the rock. The one they could go to. Well, one of the oldest, Beth being the other, but he was the oldest guy. He couldn't let himself fall apart. At least all the blood was gone, and he could be sure of that, although he doubted that it would stop the mental reminders. He'd walked into the hall and remembered it all in perfect detail, so if that was what happened to him, he dreaded to think what was going on with Evie. She must be in a terrible state, and yet.. she was holding it together. Somehow. At least, after the outburst when she found the body, but then maybe she was just trying to make everyone think she was fine.
Josh's eyes widened as he heard the crashing from Izzy's room, and for one terrible second he thought that maybe his parents were trying the same thing with Izzy to. No way in hell. He jumped up and bolted it down the corridor, completely passing her door and skidding to a hault. He turned around and jogged back, stepping right into her room and seeing everything, everywhere. He'd never seen it in such a mess! She was always such a neat person, and to be honest, Josh was impressed! Josh watched with an awe stricken face as Izzy's fist smashed into the mirror. he didn't even see that coming, and rushed straight over to her, kneeling next to her and hovering his face over her hand. "Izzy! Are you trying to kill yourself?!"
he asked without thinking. probably not the best choice of words. "Damnit! Here, I need to stop the bleeding" Josh said, reaching for a random bit of material that could have come from anything. He didn't care, he just needed to stop the bleeding. He held it against her hand, applying pressure, and moved around so that he was cradling her against his chest. "Damn, Izzy, you frightened me! What were you doing?! What's the matter?" he asked, moving his free hand to wipe her eyes. What had made her so mad that she'd done this? He didn't understand. "Did you really have to make this much of a mess? You know my tidying charms aren't good at the best of times" he tried a weak attempt at humour, but he could barely muster a smile. He hated seeing her like this. Isabella heard the footsteps rushing down the hall to her room. She didn’t even consider moving, or making it look like nothing had happened. If it was the adults, so be it. She didn’t care one bit right now. It was possible that they would even try to get it out of her what was wrong instead of even caring that she was bleeding. Or they would call her names and say she needed to stop acting like a child. She was anything, but a child. A child is too innocent to think about killing someone. A child is hidden from the cruelties of this world. They are never told the truth about death, and they are kept from many secrets the family holds. Isabella was sixteen years old, but she acted older than that. Sure she had moments where she acted crazy and childish, but that was all in good fun. When it came down to it, she knew how to act in front of people. Right now, was different. She had lost it. She could never think of her Aunt and Uncle the same way. She hated them. If she had the chance and power to do it, she would kill them. That’s all that went through her mind right now. She wanted them to pay.
Her head turned slightly to see her brother rush to her side, which in turn made her cry harder. She hated when her siblings saw her upset, because then they got upset, which made her feel worse about it. Especially when it came to Josh. He was always so good to her, and the best brother any young girl could ask for. He was always there for her when she needed him, and he would kill anyone who tried to hurt her. There was that word again. Kill. Same as murder. Resulting in death. Izzy was not little anymore, therefore, she knew more about this subject, and for the first time she lived through someone’s death. Someone who just happened to be close to her. Someone who was like a brother to her. Not as close as she was to her own brother of course, but close enough. She wanted to grow up knowing him. She wanted the chance to see Evie walk down the aisle, and Sam be the one waiting for her at the end. Now it was all a dream. A dream that was crushed. It would never happen.
Izzy pressed her face into her brother’s chest when he cradled her and put a cloth on her hand to stop the bleeding. Her crying got harder, especially when he asked what was wrong. How was she supposed to answer a question like that? ‘Oh, well Josh, you see… our Aunt and Uncle just so happened to be the ones to set up Sam’s death. Oh! And you know Mr. Styx? The headmaster. Yeah, he murdered him.’ How do you tell someone all that? That was a lot to take in. It was a lot for her, and she was the one who heard it from their mouths. How was she going to tell Evie? It was going to break her heart even more than it was already. Izzy couldn’t take all this pressure. It hurt. There was not only a weight on her shoulders, but a weight on her heart. It felt like she would never get better. She didn’t know how long it would take for her to get better, or for Evie to get better. How do you get over losing your love because of your own parents. She just wanted to… well, you know where that was going, but that’s enough of thinking about killing people.
“Josh…” She sobbed, trying to find the words. She pulled her face from his chest now, and looked up at him, her vision blurry from the tears that still poured from her eyes. “They… they did it.” She choked, the words barely coming out. It was so hard to tell someone something so horrible. “Maria and Clifford… they set up Sam’s death.” Her hand, that was not bleeding, shot up to her mouth as she let out a cough from getting herself worked up. “But.. It was Mr. Styx and Sarah Lestrange who killed him.” Her emotions now showed a mix of sadness and anger at the same time. She sat up, and pushed herself off the ground, pulling her hand from the material her brother was holding against it. Let it bleed. She didn’t care. She held her head with her hands, her back still to Joshua for a moment before she turned to look at him letting her hands drop to her side. Anyone who looked at her, without knowing what was happening now, would probably think she was mental. Her hair was out of place. Her face was beet red. She just looked rough. “They killed him Josh! He’s gone because of those monsters! I want them dead, all of them! I hate them. I want them to rot in hell where they came from!” She yelled, only loud enough to make her words clear. She didn’t want anyone downstairs to hear her harsh words. Never had Izzy been this mad, and none of her family has ever seen her like this. She never had a reason to feel like this. She dropped back down to the ground on her knees, and slumped over. “It scares me to think like this, but I hate them so much. I want them dead… I want them gone.” Her words were now in more of a whisper as she was done screaming, but that did not mean she was done crying or being angry.

stones taught me to fly, love taught me to lie LIFE TAUGHT ME TO DIE, SO IT'S NOT HARD TO FALL WHEN YOU FLOAT LIKE A CANNONBALL• • • • • • • • • • • • • • • • • • • • • • • • • • • • • • • • • • • • • • • • • • • • • Joshua hated this. He hated being on edge. It had happened a few days ago and now anytime someone screamed or shouted or cried he feared for a split second that someone else was dead. It was terrible. He hated it. Who was next, Evie? Him? If anyone touched Jaslene, well, he'd hunt them down and rip their heads off himself. Jaslene was his, and he was completely in love with her, whether his parents liked it or not. He wouldn't even care if she turned out to be a mud blood, he would love her anyway, because he loved her and not her magic. Although her personality was pretty magical. Oh, wow, Chris was right, she was wrapping him around her finger! But maybe that wasn't such a bad thing? He seemed to be a better man under her influence than he ever had been under his parents. They had taught him to be a manipulator, and to lie your way to the top, and they were the best at it. If anyone asked, they were the perfect parents, but under the surface, there was something not right there. Of course, Josh had assumed, having been cut off from the other normal families most of the time, that what his parents did was normal, and that it was for his own good, but it was just his parents way of disciplining them. At least they'd not started it from an early age, and they'd not even dared try it recently, although he had a feeling that with the whole Sam thing, it wouldn't be long. If they knew about Evie and Sam, what else did they know about? Did they know about Joshua's involvement with the Order? Did they know that both their eldest son and eldest daughter had started to fight against them and the person they supported? Did they know that Joshua and the rest of the Dalton children suspected the adults of murder? Joshua didn't want to believe that Maria and Clifford would do that to their daughter, but to be honest he wouldn't put it past them. Not to mention the possibility that his parents knew about, or were involved, in the murder of the young man that he could have called his brother in law one day. That wasn't going to happen now, and it was their fault. He'd never seen Evie so happy as when she was with Sam, and now she'd never have him to make her smile again. He didn't know how she was coping.
If he had lost Jaslene, he'd be in pieces. Of course he'd have to find the strength from somewhere to hold it together in front of Izzy, Beth, and the rest of the Daltons, but after losing the woman he loved, he didn't think he'd be able to find strength anywhere. And then he'd bide his time, of course, find out her killers and who organised it, and then he'd plot the most painful way to gain his revenge, and then he'd execute it precisely, alone of course, because he wouldn't drag anyone else into trouble with him. Although that being said, if Izzy wanted to gain revenge on someone, he'd expect himself to be involved, because he wouldn't let her go about taking the fall herself. He'd make sure that she never got suspected, let alone caught. Mind you, he'd do the same for himself of course. No trace of evidence, a nice alibi and even a location where the murderers that he'd killed where supposed to have gone. A month or two in the Maldives and then everyone would slowly forget. And then, oh, look, they decided to buy a home there and stay there for a little longer, whilst the eldest Dalton’s watched the house. Lovely. Yeah, he'd been thinking about it a lot. But sat in a quiet house, with people that could have murdered Samuel Cooper, there wasn't much else to do, other than think. And cry. Although he'd not cried until he'd cleaned up the rest of the blood. He'd done it by hand, out of respect for Sam, and all he did for Evie. Sort of a, your blood is with me too, thing, although thinking about it like that sounded weird, but the feelings were there. He was trying to make sure that he never forgot Samuel Cooper, the one that had made his innocent cousin happy. And broke her heart, filling it with grief instead. Although that last part was unintentional, and he was sure that if he'd had the chance, Sam would have stayed with Evie forever, until he died as an old man, married and happy. Now neither of them would have that chance, and that made Josh furious.
"Izzy, what-"
he went to reply, shaken up, but then the next words made everything worse. Everything they'd suspected was true. Evelyn Dalton's parents had killed off her chance at happiness, because he wasn't worthy for their daughter, in their eyes. Samuel Cooper had been there for Izzy, he'd looked out for her whenever he could, he'd been like her elder brother whenever Josh wasn't around, and she'd lost him too. Josh had never really gotten to know him, but he seemed a nice enough guy once you gave him a chance. And now, Josh wouldn't have the chance to get to know him. He'd never be able to warn him not to hurt Evie. too late. He'd never be able to actually get close and be friends with him. another missed opportunity. And the worst part was, that he was left here, watching his cousin hide the fact that she was falling apart, whilst his sister tore her room up, and his aunt and uncle celebrated their success in getting rid of their problem. How was he meant to cope with this, when he wasn't even twenty years old. It was silly. "Izzy, are you sure? How do you know?" Josh asked, not sure if he wanted to hear. This was too real, too close to home, too evil to contemplate. "Styx! Headmaster Styx?!" Josh asked, raising his eyebrows and his eyes widened in shock. "Are you certain of this, Izabella?" he asked, wanting to be sure. It was one thing to silently agree on the possibility that they'd organised it, but it was completely another thing to openly accuse them of it. If they did, Joshua wouldn't have them living in the house with those monsters for another second. If he had to move them out onto the street, so be it. He wouldn't have Evelyn around the murderers, it wasn't right. It was disgusting. How could they do that!? Did they not have any maternal feelings? "shh, Izzy, hush, please, keep your voice down! They can't know that we know" he replied, the only rational thought in his head. If he let his anger rule him, they'd have been dead by now, but he had to control it. He had to be smart about this. They had to be smart about this. "Shh, Izzy, they'll have their comeuppance, I swear that they will. Karma. It's going to happen." he replied, stroking her hair gently and rocking side to side, wondering how he was going to process this information properly. Isabella never thought she would have to go through something like this in a lifetime. She never wished to be in this situation at sixteen years old. How could her aunt and uncle do this to Evie and everyone else who cared for Sam? He had a family. Parents and a little sister he loved dearly. A little sister he couldn't be there for anymore. She could only imagine how his sister would take the news. That little girl would probably become dead to the world. She would most likely cry most of the time, and it would take years to just stop crying. But, she would probably never let it go. For the rest of her life she will have to wake up everyday wondering what it would be like if her brother was still alive. And she would wake up a lot, thinking everything was perfect and then she would remember that he is gone, and slip into depression once again. How could someone do that to a litttle girl. And let's not even get into how the parents feel. Parents should never have to bury their children. It should be the other way around. They're probably thinking 'what could I have done to save my son?' Do you know what they answer to that is? It's nothing. Because they couldn't stop the Daltons. They were too powerful. They killed somone's son, brother, and friend. And for what? To keep their daughter from marrying someone they didn't approve of? Well, how would they feel if someone did that to one of their children? They deserve a big fuck you right in the face.
They would get exactly that too. Isabella didn't know when, or how, but they would get what they deserved. In her mind, they deserved a slow and painful death, even if Sam got a quick death, just because his death caused so much more hurt than what he had to go through. The aftermath was much worse. She couldn't understand how people could just do that to someone, and it was even scarier that it was her own family. She felt disgusting to be apart of this pureblood family. This family so proud. They should not be proud. They should be ashamed. They should be miserable, never happy. People say all the time that everyone deserves happiness, but they don't. They only deserve pain and misery. Nothing good should come to them. Never did she want to think like this. She never thought she would have a reason to. All she could think about right now was killing them. She was no longer that innocent girl who always thought about helping her family, and doing things to make them proud. No. What she was going to do now, was everything to disobey them. She would not listen to another word that escaped their lying lips. They were dead to her. She disowned them in her heart.
And what if it was her brother, or sister? She wouldn't even be able to take that pain. This was a just a friend of hers and she was basically going crazy at the thought it was her own family who killed that friend. They were lucky it was not one of her siblings, or even cousins. If they did anything to hurt them again, she would kill them with her bare hands. She never wanted to admit that she would have the strength to do that to someone, but she was not going to let someone take a person she cared about from her again. There would be a major price to pay. There was going to be a price to pay for Sam's death as well. Not from Izzy, because she wasn't going to do something right now, and neither was anyone else. At least she didn't think so, but they would get what they deserved. One day.
Anyway, at first she felt like her brother didn't believe her, which made her even more angry, but she soon realized he just wanted to know the truth. He just wanted to make sure she wasn't accusing because she was grieving. There were times when people lied because they wanted someone to blame for something that was causing them pain. Isabella wouldn't do that, and she definitely wasn't making this up. "Yes, I'm sure!" She cried. It hurt so much when she found out Sam was dead, but now that she knew who did it, it would take her a long time to get over it, if it was even possible. She felt that any little thing could make her go mad. Not angry mad, because she was already there, but crazy mad. This was overwhelming to her. "I know because I was down there. I answered the door for Mr. Styx and Ms. Lestrange. Then Clifford came and told me to go see you. I was going to, but then I got curious and I listened to their conversation. They were both there Clifford and Maria, a long with the other two." She felt sick to her stomach. She was related to murderers. That is one of the worst thing a person could have to deal with. She didn't want to live in that house anymore. She wanted to get away from them. "I heard them say it Josh. I heard it all." She didn't know if hearing would be enough to go to court with, but that's not what she was doing. She was telling her brother, and she knew he would believe her. She knew this, not only because he was her brother, but because she would not be this torn up if she was lying. Her room would still be in perfect order and her hand would not be bleeding from punching a lousy mirror. "Professor Styx is a fake. He's going to to destroy Hogwarts and all of the good people. The worst part is.. He's on the inside." She chuckled lightly, making her seem crazy. She was, at least right now. She couldn't handle all the information that was just thrown on her. "I'm not being dramatic. I feel something bad will happen Joshua. I know he will be behind it too. I just know it. And I wouldn't be surprised if our parents and our aunt and uncle will be as well."
Isabella took in a deep breath and then exhaled as she leaned against her brother. He was now stroking her hair and she was starting to calm down. She didn't know what she would be doing right now if he hadn't walked in. It helped also that she was able to tell him. Hell, she didn't know what she would be able to do without her brother. He was practically her support system and she knew she could go to him for anything. She trusted him more than anyone. He was her best friend. She was sure of that. "I hope the karma gets them soon Josh, I really do. I can't sit around doing nothing, and know that they got away with this. I can't watch as they take someone else we care about. I mean... Beth... Beth is dating Chris... They would surely kill him if they knew... They can't kill him. I would not be able to handle it... I have known him longer than Sam and I could not live knowing my own family took my friend. They have already taken one. It scares me to think how many more."

stones taught me to fly, love taught me to lie LIFE TAUGHT ME TO DIE, SO IT'S NOT HARD TO FALL WHEN YOU FLOAT LIKE A CANNONBALL• • • • • • • • • • • • • • • • • • • • • • • • • • • • • • • • • • • • • • • • • • • • • Josh wanted the truth. He was sick of lies. He was sick of keeping things from his family, even if it was in order to protect them. Of course he'd make sure something like this was kept from Evie for as long as was needed. Be it weeks or months, she had enough to be dealing with at the moment, so she didn't need to add the possibility that her parents were the ultimate cause of all her grief to the list. Josh had seen them, hovering around her as if they couldn't be more upset if they tried. It probably was because they couldn't be more upset, but they were trying. Trying to suppress the happiness of the success of their plan, that is. He wondered icily if they even felt a smidge of guilt. They took away the boy that their daughter loved, though, so he doubted that their cold hearts could feel anything other than pride, ambition, greed, and happiness at their success. Damn them for everything, if this was true. They were the reason that Evie cried to herself, and the reason that she'd been mooching around the house in her pyjamas, like she had no reason anymore. They were the reason that at seventeen years old, their daughter had held the body of her boyfriend, as any trace of life within him ebbed away, along with any chance of their future together. And what hurt the most was that it seemed that they couldn't even really feel bad. They hovered around her pretending to care, but inside all they could think about, no doubt, was who they could pair Evie up with, before she managed to find someone else. If this was true, well, he didn't know if there was anyone he'd hate more.
Josh had come to expect a lack of parental instinct from his parents, after all, the memories of those curses were still there, and more taunting than ever. It was more than just getting information out of the kids wasn't it? It was a form of control. It was a taunt. 'We could do worse, you should feel lucky.' That's what it was. It was torturous and painful and emotionally exhausting. No child should have to suffer at the hands of their parents, but to have curses, unforgivable curses, cast upon you for information about your family; well that was crossing the line tenfold, wasn't it? He was glad he'd had the strength to keep his mouth shut, or else someone else could very well be dead, and Josh would never be able to lose Chris, he was his right hand man, his best friend, and he'd let nothing break that up. If his parents found out about Chris, well, that would be terrible, but Josh would be the first one to come to their aid and protect him. Even if it meant that Josh had to guard Chris morning, noon and night, he'd do it, because he knew that his parents would find a way to get to Chris. They were already starting to get suspicious of the children after Izzy pulled that stunt to drop herself into that arranged marriage with that big headed pervert, Byron Nott. Josh hated him too, he was up there in the hate league, right next to his parents. Izzy was his little sister and he wouldn't ever let anyone hurt her. He didn't know what Byron was like, but he seemed very controlled, and it was the controlled that could easily snap, at times.
He'd even seen that in his uncle Clifford at times, and he hated it. It was unpredictable and dangerous, and he didn't want Izzy in the firing line, just in case his feeling about Byron was right. He'd taken all the shit his parents could give so that they didn't dare try it on Izzy. If anyone hurt Izzy in any way, physically or emotionally, Josh would literally want to rip their heads off and feed it to a family of acrumentula. He didn't care if he had to travel to Africa or wherever, with them bound up and wandless, as long as he got to carry out his acrumentula plan, then he could be happy. And, there'd be no evidence of foul play, so no Azkaban. He knew some obliviators, he'd make sure that one of them he could trust got rid of all memories of knowing the boy who hurt Izzy, and then he was completely safe from any possible prison sentence. He couldn't stick it in Azkaban, he'd probably lose his mind. But it would be worth it, knowing that the idiots that hurt Izzy were gone. Plural, just in case. "Well that's that then."
he replied, knowing that she was telling the truth, and there really was no appropriate response when you found out that your aunt and uncle were most definitely responsible for the death of your possible future family member, and also possible future friend. He highly doubted that there was any sort of handbook for this kind of thing. After all, it was hardly routine, wasn't it? "I really wish that they'd taken after Grandma instead of going the opposite way" he sighed, trying to think of something knowledgeable and wise to say about all this, but all he could think of was angry threats. "I can't believer her. Sarah Lestrange works with Evie. How could she do that and then face Evie knowing that Sam's dead because of her?" he commented aloud, angry and upset and even completely shocked by the audacity that this girl had, to work with the girlfriend of the guy that she helped kill. How sick and twisted was that? Did she know that Evie was dating him? She had to, right? They were at Dalton Manor. Damn her and her twisted ways. "They disgust me. I hate them for this. Izzy, we'll work it out, we'll make sure they don't get away with it." he replied, stroking her hair comfortingly. "But Evie doesn't need to know. Not yet. She's already been knocked down to the ground by the Sam news. Hearing that her parents did it because they didn't like him dating her would be a kick whilst she's down, and they're worse. When you're low, Iz, you think you can't sink any lower, and then another thing comes along, and you drop a few more levels." he said, knowing how bad it could get. He'd been pretty low in the past, and his family's curses hadn't helped anything. That was the kick whilst he was down, and it was always the worst. At least for him. ”I had a bad feeling about him. I always did." he said, shaking his head, a disgusted look upon his features. He didn’t know if Izzy knew about his involvement with the order, but he knew he’d have to get word to them, to confirm everything they’d thought about Styx. He was a fake and a murderer and he needed to go. ”We won’t rest until he’s gone, Bells, promise.” he replied, using the royal ‘we’ to refer to the Order, not even thinking about it any more. No more secrets. No more lies, and he’d get the kids all out of there as soon as humanly possible. Josh didn’t care if he had to steal from his parents to do it, he just wanted to get away. Call it compensation for everything that they’d done to him and to Beth. "Our parents are evil, and now we know that they are too. It's a shame really, I liked uncle Cliff's name. Not anymore." he replied, positively seething. He didn't know how to react anymore, and all he could summon up was complete anger and hatred for what they'd become, and what they'd done, and all the pain that they'd caused, too. Josh sucked in a breath as she spoke aloud what he'd thought only a few moments ago. "Don't go there, Iz. I won't let anything happen to him, even if I need to act as a round the clock armed guard, I'll do it. It's my job. Kind of. And he's my best friend, I'm not losing him. And if they find out about Chris, then I'll kill them before they have the chance to even react to it." he replied, knowing that he wasn't about to sit and watch as everyone he loved and cared about that his parents didn't deem suitable was killed. He couldn't do it, he'd fall apart, and he couldn't crumble right now, because Izzy needed him. ”Come on, we need to go to the bathroom and clean up your hand, Bells." he said, moving forward a little to motivate her to get up.[/blockquote][/blockquote] • • • • • • • • • • • • • • • • • • • • • • • • • • • • • • • • • • • • • • • • • • • • • partner in crime

It took all she had inside to calm herself down. This rampage was something she had never gone through before. Of course, she had never had something like this happen to her before. It scared her to think what she might do if it happened again. This was big for her. Usually she would keep her composure, but this time was not one of those times. She broke because of them and she didn’t know what to think about the situation at hand. In fact she could barely think at all. All that ran through her head was hating them and hurting them the same. Not only that, she couldn’t get Christopher out of her head. She could just picture him getting himself killed as well and that in itself was not helping her to calm down. She did not want to lose him. She could NOT lose him. She still… loved him.
It was weird to be honest. She wasn’t around him as much as she used to be, but when she was around him the feelings came back. She hated it, and wished it would go away. That was part of the reason she put herself into this marriage. She was hoping to get the feelings to go away. Not because she would fall for Byron. No, she would definitely not do that. But because she would be distracted from the life she was in before she was put in the marriage. She was hoping worrying about the marriage and everything else would get her mind off of him. But now that Sam was killed because of loving Evie, she was scared for Chris because he was in love with her sister Beth. Now, he was on her mind all the time, and it was messing with her. She needed to find a way to get over him, because she knew he would never be hers. He would always be Beth’s. Even if he was taken from all of them, he would be Beth’s like Sam is still Evie’s.
But most of all, she could not lose him because he was her friend. One of her best friends. She knew he would be there for her like she would for him. He would probably react like her brother would if someone tried to hurt her. Of course, Josh was more, overprotective. She didn’t like to be overprotected, but such is life, and she does like feeling protected and cared for. She would only admit that to herself though. She always told them that she hated to be protected so heavily, but in the end she realized she liked it. There were a lot of people who didn’t have anyone that cared. She had three siblings, four cousins, and a few really close, amazing friends and she wouldn’t trade that for the world.
Isabella ignored the comment about the adults in their family taking after Grandma. He was probably trying to come up with something witty, but failed. He did that a lot, but that didn’t mean anything at the moment. So, she forgot about the fact that he was even trying. “I can’t believe Sarah would do that to Evelyn either. I didn’t know her well, but I wouldn’t have expected it from her. At least she didn’t seem like she would be evil. But, that just proves that nothing is what it seems.” She chuckled lightly. They were disgusting people and no matter what it cost her, they would pay for it. She just had to figure out how she would make them pay. And how would she tell Evie about all of this. Izzy knew it would break her heart even more than it was right now, but it couldn’t be kept for her forever. She needed to know her parents were evil so she wasn’t telling them things that could ruin hers or other people’s lives. “I know Joshua. I might be dumb, but I’m not stupid… Well, actually I might be both.” She said, trying to make a joke even though she was a wreck. She didn’t know if Josh would like her joking or not. She was just trying to find a way to make herself feel better. “To be honest, I’ve never cared for Mr. Styx. But I didn’t think he would do something like this. Just like I didn’t expect it from Sarah. I want him out of Hogwarts. No one is safe there, but I can’t do anything about it, because I could end up dead if they knew I found out about what they did and was telling people. There are so many people I care about at Hogwarts Joshua. This needs to end soon, before more innocent people get hurt.” She started to panic again. All she wanted to do was calm down, but she couldn’t when so many bad thoughts ran through her head. So many people ran through her head. Chris. Jaslene. David. Gareth. Kelsie. Arthur. Alex. James. Scarlett and many more people. She had so many good friends and so much to lose because of these people. “I know you’ll protect him Josh. I know, but sometimes that’s not good enough. They’re too powerful. I… need to know he’s safe. Not just him. I need to know everyone I care about is safe. I just… I’m scared Josh. I’m scared that I’m going to break. Worse than this. What if I never go back to being myself? I just go crazy and stay that way?” She took a deep breathe and then got up when he moved. He was worried about cleaning her hand. What a small problem compared to the large one that was happening right now? She didn’t care about her hand, but she couldn’t just let it bleed either. Josh wouldn’t let her anyways.

stones taught me to fly, love taught me to lie LIFE TAUGHT ME TO DIE, SO IT'S NOT HARD TO FALL WHEN YOU FLOAT LIKE A CANNONBALL• • • • • • • • • • • • • • • • • • • • • • • • • • • • • • • • • • • • • • • • • • • • • Josh needed to see Jaslene. No, not just like he had before. He NEEDED it. He needed to hold her, to wrap his arms around her, to bury his face in her hair, to tell her that he loved her. That's the thing, isn't it? When someone so close to you lost the love of their life, right under their nose, well, it made you realise what you had, and even more, how easily it could be taken away from you. He'd never let anyone touch Jaslene. He'd keep a round the clock eye on her if he had to. Even if it meant returning to the Slytherin common room and pitching a tent right in the middle of it. Even if it meant working night and day to find permanent protective spells to keep her out of harms way, he'd do it. Heck, he'd do it for everyone that he loved. The phrase 'wrap them up in bubble wrap' sprung to mind, although it would take a lot more than bubble wrap to protect from any unforgivable curses that came her way. And of course, any curses that were aimed at Jaslene would be unforgivable. He'd never forgive anyone who tried to hurt her. Not that they had a reason, she was pure blooded and they'd chosen her for him, but the fact was that if they did find something, anything, and decided that she was wrong for him, he couldn't trust them not to kill her. Not anymore. One shouldn't fear that their parents would take away the one that you loved, but he did. And more than that, he worried not only about Jaslene, but for Chris too. Chris was his best friend, and his parents clearly wouldn't approve. He'd never let them touch him either. At least when he was all pitched up in his tent in the common room he could protect both of them. Maybe he could convince someone to hire him for that job. Slytherin protector. No. That sounded weird. Too much like a geeky superhero from the magazines that Arthur liked to read. Sorry, not magazines, they were called 'comics'. He stood corrected.
Who else could they hurt? Theoretically, anyone who came close to the Dalton family could now be put in danger. Pretty much anyone who the rents wouldn't approve of could be done for, and they wouldn't even know the danger surrounding them. Being a Dalton was like a curse. It was up to the children of the Dalton's to turn this around, however. He was an order member, and a pretty good one, too. He was training alongside Beth to be an Auror, and the fact was that he got on pretty well with a lot of people at the ministry. Evelyn was a trainee healer, and she was doing good too. That was three Dalton children who weren't devoting their lives to the evil that roamed the wizarding world. Three less evil people in the world was a good thing, of course. And now that Sam was dead, Evie would never go over to 'the dark side' so to speak, because she'd been a firsthand witness to the horror of murder and death. She'd held the lifeless body of the boy that he loved, and to be fair it felt like in killing Sam, they took a part of Evie as well. In the days following his death she'd been mooching around in her pyjamas, barely coming out of her room and not even caring about her appearance. It was like she had nothing to live for. Josh wanted someone to make her smile again so badly, but he didn't know if it was too soon. Well, no, of course it was to soon. She was probably still getting nightmares. He was, and he didn't have the body practically fall on him. If only he'd gone to answer the door. Sam could still be alive. Or at very least, he could have been there to find the body, and spare Evie that. As the oldest male child, he felt like it was his duty to protect the younger generation of the family, and he'd failed in not stopping her from seeing Sam's cold body hit the ground.
"I know. She worked with the Order of the Phoenix sometimes too. I didn't think that she would do anything like that. Well I hope she sees what she's done to Evie. I hope she suffers for it. She as good as took her life away too."
Josh replied bitterly, not impressed with that Sarah girl. He had a feeling that she couldn't be trusted, but he put it aside, she was working with the Order and that was good enough for him. Apparently, she just wasn't good enough for the order. And now she'd damaged Evie. She'd taken the man that Evie loved away, she'd torn apart Evie's life, and she'd made her lose the one person that Joshua had ever known her to care about. She was the reason that Evie walked around like a ghost, and she was the reason that Evie would barely dress anymore. She was Evil, with a capital 'E'. He would never look that woman in the eyes again. He'd want to kill her. And Styx! Don't even get him started. Josh hate the thought of Jonothan Styx being stuck in Hogwarts with Jaslene. He was too close to the woman that Joshua loved, and if Styx ever spoke a single word to her, Joshua would be about ready to kill him right there on the spot. Not that he'd be there. Unless he went along with the tent pitching idea, but for some reason he doubted that Styx would go along with it. And it would most definitely interfere with his work. But at least he'd be able to be close to Jaslene. Best not try it though, he'd be booted out with no chance to go back if he did. Unless he asked permission, but that wasn't going to happen, and it wasn't like he could just turn up at the Slytherin in entrance out of the blue with a tent and some clothes, was it? No. "I was just about to raise my eyebrows and question your sanity there" he teased, a small smile crossing his features. He felt a little guilty for smiling when Evie probably couldn't, but it made Isabella feel better, he was sure. "Calm. Be calm. I can see the vein in your forehead, it's starting to throb" he teased, joking tones invading his voice. "I know, I'll do the best I can to make sure that he's turfed out of Hogwarts as soon as possible. I don't want him anywhere near Jaslene, the same castle is too close for my liking." he replied, scowling a little. And Chris. He was too close to Chris too, too close to everyone. Styx should have been locked away to rot in Azkaban, there was no way that Mrs Malfoy would have misjudged him and set him as the head of the school, it was clear that something really was wrong there. Jonothan Styx had to be taken down, and as fast and effectively as possible. No mess, no fuss, he had to go. Josh would kill him himself, but he wasn't about to go to Azkaban and leave his wife to be outside, waiting to visit him. He wasn't going to leave Isabella worrying about him inside those walls. He wasn't about to lose his sanity for that man. The ones he cared about had lost so much as it was. No chance. Not him. They wouldn't lose him too. He needed to be there to protect himself. "I'll tell Jaslene to walk with him any time. I'll make sure that neither of them are alone unless they're in their respective dorms. I'll make sure they'll always be there to protect each other. You will not lose yourself over that man. You will not lose anyone else over that man. Sam was it. That's where it ends. That's the line, he'll never have the chance to cross it again" Josh said, resolutely. Josh led Isabella down the corridor and to the bathroom, where he turned the cold tap on and ran her hand underneath it, washing away all the blood. Where was Evie when he needed her? But then he couldn't let her see Izzy in this state, she'd ask why and she couldn't know, not yet. Too soon. Doing the best he could to clear her hand, he checked the wound and then took his wand from his pocket, summoning some cloth, which he carefully used to bandage up her hand as best he could. "Right, first aid was never my strong point, but that'll do. How does it feel?" he asked, wiping his hand on his trousers to dry them off, before inspecting his work. Not bad.[/blockquote][/blockquote] • • • • • • • • • • • • • • • • • • • • • • • • • • • • • • • • • • • • • • • • • • • • • partner in crime
