that's alright because I LOVE THE WAY YOU LIE - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - dominique, although usually having a great day, had for once, suffered a bad day. she had woken up at a stupid time on sunday morning, broken a heel, which she then proceeded to fix, thank merlin that reparo existed! and then she'd not been able to get her hair to go right. it had taken seven unsuccessful tries before she had managed to get it straight and pretty like it usually was. all in all, the day had not started on a good foot. and now dom had the task of climbing in her newly fixed heels, up to the owlry to get her owl so that she could send the letter that she was about to write to her friend in France. She didn't correspond with her often because it was a long flight for the bird, and she didn't want to force it to fly too far, it could kill it and then she would have no owl! not that the owl was particularly useful, considering that it didn't seem to like her. it was the owl that her step father had bought her, after her owl, who had been her mothers, had died of old age. it was a pity as that old owl was graceful and petite and always nice to dominique, but this new owl seemed not to like her. it had pecked her various times, and she was soon to buy herself a more compliant owl, because she couldn't stand this one a second longer. and it wasn't as if she was mean to it either, as it always brought the stupid thing treats, and yet it would hardly ever come down from the depths of the owlry, so she had the task of trying to coax it out. it seemed to like everyone else just as well, but not her.
dom pulled out a roll of parchment and some quills and ink, and began to write this letter in her pretty, flowing handwriting. she wrote it in her fluent french, because her friend spoke very little english, and once she was done, she sealed it safely inside an envelope, and dripped the wax over, before sealing with the stamp that her mother had bought her, with the delacour symbol on it. once it was all done, she slipped the envelope into her clutch bag, and made her way out of the dormitory. she walked through the almost empty common room, as it was half past seven in the morning, and it was hardly as if it would be roaring with life at that time. the greenish glow always kind of un-nerved dominique, and it was always so cold in the slytherin common room, but that was because the lake water was practically on top of the common room. no, not practically, honestly it was! She exited the common room through the portrait and headed out of the dungeons and into the entrance hall. it took her around half an hour in her clicking heels to make it to the owlry, but she finally did, and there was her owl, hidden high above, refusing to come down. she fished in her bag for the treats that she had stowed away, and offered some to her bird. "Oh come now, please would you just get down? Please? I have treats for you, it isn't as if i threaten your wellbeing. if you do not return now, horus, then i will never bring you treats again. yes that is a threat. please?"
She practically begged the stupid bird but it wouldn't come down. dominique heaved a sigh and glanced around, her eyes landing on some boy who had walked through the door. "Alo! please, could you help me? I would be eternally thankful." She asked him, fluttering her eyelashes and smiling up at him. this one was very cute indeed, and she wondered if her charms would make him agree, as she wanted to send this letter, at once. if that dull bird would come down then maybe she would talk the man into spending some time with her, as he was very cute, and she could tell that she would be entertained by him, if only she could get away from this stuffy place, she could feel more comfortable and have a laugh with him. "It is that stupid bird, it will not come down, i think it dislikes me, but it likes everyone else, which is why it is stupid" she explained, her french accent slipping into her voice again, just as it had a moment ago. she just wished that this bird would be obedient, as she felt like she wanted to throw a hissy fit and make it come down, but it wouldn't look good in front of the cute boy. dominique let her eyes travel the height of him, stopping on his eyes, his hair and his lips, which were all very acceptable to her standards. she pulled her lips into the same smile as before, hoping that he would agree to help otherwise she wouldn't know what to do. Cayden had just finished the letter to his father with his latest explanation for not coming homre for the holidays again. Every year, it was the same news, just with a different, fabricated excuse. Sometimes he felt bad for leaving his old man alone on all those holidays, but then he'd get a reply from his father detailing the party he'd had, the latest woman he was manipulating, and all the new alcoholic drinks he had encountered during the holiday and it would remind Cayden why he stayed at Hogwarts instead. Sometimes he even questioned why he felt like he owed his father any explanation as to why he wouldn't be showing up, but, he reminded himself that these letters were more for his sake than his dad's. At the rate his dad was going he would be dying within the next few years, he was sure of it. Between conniving women, the alcohol, and angry debt collectors, Cayden was sure his dad was going to die before he turned forty. So, these letters were his way of checking up on his dad, without him knowing of course. Cayden often felt like he was more of a father to his father than his dad had ever been to him, but he didn't mind it, it was just the way things were. He couldn't abandon his father because in the end, they were all each other had and no matter how sick to his stomach his father made him, he could still remember the good days when his mum was alive and his dad was like a saint, and as long as he could do that, he couldn't let that man die alone. And so that's why he was here, making his way up to the owlery. He expected it to be empty considering it was early morning and most people didn't mail their letters until the afternoon. The only reason he was out there this early was because he had fallen asleep writing the letter and so the letter he was supposed to send the night before was now late and how late depended on how early he sent it.
So, of course he was surprised to see a rather flustered Dominique Delacour up in the Owlery talking to her owl. He stood there for a moment, because like I just said, he was surprised. But, he was more surprised at the fact that Ms. Delacour was flustered. For him, that was a first. Like any other male on campus, he had seen her around and heard other guys fawn over conversations with her. And from what he had seen and heard, she was supposed to be the essence of charm, calm, control, and gracefulness. What he saw was a flustered girl begging an owl, not a goddess who's very presence should shock him. 'Perhaps she's not so different from the rest of us' he thought with a slight smile. The scene was rather funny but also endearing, so he quickly tied his letter to his ,not so cleverly named, owl, Screech's, leg and sent him off towards his father's home before turning to see if she needed help. He chuckled slightly as she asked him for his help, she was obviously trying to use her charm with her fluttered eyelashes and her smile, but he would've helped her anyway, just because that was the type of guy he was. He grabbed a treat from her hand and offered it out to the owl who hesitantly inched closer, watching Dominique as he moved, before taking the treat into his beak while Cayden set to work tying the letter to it's leg.
“It seems,” he said after finishing tying the letter and the owl flew off towards its destination. “that your charms don't work too well on owls.” he laughed a little, hoping she didn't upset her with his banter. He hoped he was in a way like that owl because he had seen the way other guys go mooning around after a conversation with Dominique and he did not want to look as ridiculous as they had. But, there was something about her that made him want to get to know her better. Perhaps he hoped that she wasn't just a pretty face because he couldn't possibly spend time with her if that was all she was. Either way, he had helped her and he expected that she'd like to have a conversation as well. “I'm Cayden, by the way, Cayden Marc Johnson” he added.

that's alright because I LOVE THE WAY YOU LIE - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - dominique always wished silently that she could stay here for the summer, as Hogwarts was her home, and she would love to be able to roam the hallways, uncovering the lovely castles secrets. she knew that there was hidden passageways into town and to other various places, but she didn't know where any of them were. she wondered that if she had been given the summers to wander around, maybe she would have found some of these passageways and learned what other secrets that the castle held. you see, dominique's life was not as perfect as she would have liked people to believe. everyone thought that she would always have a good time, wherever she went, and although she tried her best with this, she knew that it was impossible when you had a new baby brother crying his lungs out every night. you see, dominique's home life was rather complicated. she was happy living in france with her mother, who was doing well as a single mother, with a good job and enough money to support them and keep them a little house that was beautiful, with a pretty garden and what not. but then she met jack davies, and fell in love. yes, love! and then as if that wasn't enough, she not only brought a new man into the role of dominique's father, when she'd been coping well enough without one, but she upped and moved them to London, or at least the outskirts of it, where there were many fields.
the house itself was a beautiful farmhouse, with the fields also being owned by jack, who was quite rich. yes, the house was pretty, but dominique neither wanted nor needed the influence of a father figure, she was getting on just fine. and then they married and had a baby and now the pretty house was always filled with screaming. ahh she hated it! peter, her half brother, he was cute enough, but his cries were terrible and practically shook the walls! he was two years old not that long ago, but he still managed to shake the house with crying. and then the worst was when she was home, they thought that they could treat her as babysitter, and pressed peter into her care whilst they went out shopping and all that, and dominique hated that. she loved peter, yes, and he seemed to like her, but that wasn't the point. she wasn't there to play nanny, and they should pay for one if they wanted one, but she was not happy to do it. yes, and now she had this bad day, and summer was approaching, and it was safe to say that she was very flustered compared to how she usually was. usually her composure got the better of her, and she kept calm and flirtatious and whatever else she needed to be to get her own way. of course her charms never worked with peter, but she could play the piano thanks to lessons whilst she was younger, and she did that for him often, lulling him into a sense of security. she would be able to bewitch the piano when she turned seventeen, thank goodness, so her arms wouldn't hurt with cramp from playing for too long. she would still play though, but only for a little while, because playing too much caused pain in her fingers.
it was the same composure as she usually had that dominique was searching for now. how embarrassing for a boy to see her in such a defeated and flustered state. she was not easily embarrassed in front of men, but this managed to bring a slight pink tinge to her cheeks. she watched him, relaxing her hand as he removed the treat, and he managed successfully to coax the owl down. why did that stupid thing not like her? everyone else seemed to, but not her own damned owl. that was pathetic. it was a shame that the veela part of her didn't work on the owl too, else it would easily come down to her, but no, it had to be stubborn. it probably had something to do with jack, maybe the stupid thing sensed that dom was not pleased with him for moving her from her home, and seeing as jack had bought the owl, maybe the owl was prejudiced against her. ahh that was silly. she passed the letter to the boy with a thankful smile, and watched him tie it to the bird, and then the bird fly off. dominique laughed when he stated the thing that she had been thinking. that was odd too, as she usually giggled suggestively, but this was a proper laugh. "oui, it is a shame, although it does tend to work on almost every man, so i understand that there would have to be some limit to it's power"
she returned, the french accent slightly taking over her speech, but it was just a hint, not as thick as usual. She smiled when he stated his name and she nodded. ”dominique nicole delacour, i am glad to meet you, cayden. thank you for your help, how can i repay the favour?” she asked, wanting to know what she could do to help him in return. He smiled slightly at the pink tinge to her cheeks, obviously she was embarrassed to be seen outside of her element. Her element being anywhere where she was in control. He was sure that it was odd for her, not having any control over what the owl did, seeing as how, she obviously had some type of control almost wherever she went. And as she laughed Cayden couldn't help but smile again. He had gotten her to laugh, to really laugh, not a flirtatious giggle or one forced out by manners but a genuine chuckle. 'It does tend to work on every man, so I understand that there would have to be some limit to it's power.' he laughed. “It's only fair.” he replied “Imagine what you could do if it worked on everything.”, he could hardly imagine the consequences of any kind of limitless power. Honestly, it was a scary thought. Any kind of power charm, wit, magic, whatever, without a limit was dangerous. As Cayden was thinking he suddenly realized something. Her french accent that was normally dripping from every word was no where near as thick. It was rather odd and he wondered what the reason behind it was but he pushed it from his mind. “Repay the favor?” he asked more stalling to think than asking for a clarification. It wasn't a big deal although he did consider saving the favor for another time, you never know when you could use one. But he decided against it and simply said, “There's no need. It was not that hard.” he smirked a little. And after a moment tried to think of something else to say, not wanting to end the conversation just yet. Cayden normally would have left the owlery right after helping her out, he wasn't exactly what people would call a 'social butterfly'. But he was intrigued by Dominique, whether it was the facade that she was unattainable or her veela charm.
“So, Ms. Delacour, how do you like Hogwarts so far? Oh and London too.”he asked as he leaned against the wall. He knew she had moved recently and wondered what she thought of her new home. He was sure it didn't compare to her old home, especially since it was in France, which of course is known for it's beauty and culture. But, maybe she enjoyed it at least a little. And he couldn't imagine that she disliked the school. Of course, he might have been a little biased in his opinion considering the school had practically saved him from turning into his dad. Then again, some people would say they came a little late. His dad had squashed any ideas of true love he had when he was younger. In Cayden's mind nearly everyone around you has some sort of agenda whether sinister or not. Those same people would say that was why he kept to himself most of the time and that if he could 'fix that' he could be a really popular kid and be very successful. But, anyway, Cayden loved Hogwarts, it was one place where he could excel where he didn't have to worry about people talking about him and the crazy drunk that his father was. Where he wasn't constantly reminded of his mother's absence.

that's alright because I LOVE THE WAY YOU LIE - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - dominique noticed his lips pulled into a smile, and she wondered what that reason was. had she said something or done something that made him smile? if there was one thing that annoyed dominique other than lack of control, it was the lack of knowing why. she hated not knowing something, like if someone had a secret, she positively had to know so that she didn't feel left out. she hated feeling left out, and although that feeling didn't occur with her very often, on occasion it was known that she wasn't aware of something that her friends were, and then she got very upset with them because they would not tell her what the secret that they whispered about was. in the end, she had gone off in a mood, and twenty minutes later her friend revealed the secret to her, and she felt back in the loop again. but she hated feeling alone, she hated that feeling, and that was why she hated her stepfather so much, because when it was just her and her mother they were close, going horse riding together, and doing many things together, but now she was always out with her husband, or looking after her baby, or out with friends, and she never seemed to have time for dominique. yes, she disliked her step father for being the cause of something that made her feel alone in the place she was to call home.
when he responded to her sentence, dominique cast her eyes downward for a moment. many people had asked her why she'd called her beauty and her veela charm a curse, and she'd always smiled and joked and made up some silly reason, but her real reason remained just hers, a secret. her charm over men was a curse, because many men were blindly attracted to her, but she never could tell which ones liked her for herself. when she found someone who could keep her interest, she didn't want to have him hold her and whisper loving things in her year, and all the while have to be questioning whether it was the truth, and that he loved her personality, or whether it was the veela charm coming through and making them think they loved her. yes, it was a curse some times, but it could be a blessing too, especially when she needed help, attention, conversation, or flirtation to keep her interested and entertained. also, more than that, it was great when someone such as she, who desired attention, was lonely and feeling alone, because there was always some man around willing to flatter her and do what he could to impress her, insisting that sometimes the most silly of lies were true.
some had said that they were a vampire hunter, or they were the killer of a dragon that caused terror to many people. it made her laugh though, the stories they came up with, but she couldn't remember ever laughing properly in the presence of a man until today, although she'd already lost her composure by then. "i think, that i would rather give it up than have it's power be limitless, because it would scare me with what i could do"
she returned coolly, with much thought going into her answer. and if it's power is limitless i would never tell if someone truely loved me she added in her head, inwardly sighing. he seemed to think the offer of the favour over a lot, and dominique waited for his answer. "yes, of course, you have helped me and i wish to help you in return, in any way that i can" she replied with a slight smile and a nod of her head. she wondered if she had used her accent without thinking, and not noticing it either, and then he wasn't able to understand her. or maybe she spoke too fast, as she always spoke fast when speaking french, and maybe it had translated into english. her surprise on her face was hidden well, but there was still hints of it in her expression. no one had ever turned down the offer of her favour before, whether they asked for something silly, or something manageable. "how challenging it was doesn't mean that it did not help, cayden, are you sure that there is nothing i can do to help you out?" she asked him, slightly taken aback that he thought his help wasn't big. whether it was a big help to him or not, it was a big help to her, because that wretched bird would never come when she asked, and she really wanted to post that letter and catch up with her friends in france. when he asked about how she found the place, dominique paused, making sure as to phrase it right. she wasn't going to mention the fact that she disliked her step father, because she would like the appearance to remain that her personal life was just rosy and fine. she didn't want people asking questions, as that was nosey. it was her life, was it not? so why should she tell anyone else any problems. she didn't like admitting that she faced problems in case someone saw it as weak. if there was a weak girl at hogwarts, it was most certainly not miss dominique delacour. although anyone who had seen her beg that bird to come down may protest otherwise. "hogwarts is beautiful, the grounds exquisite, and the castle holding many secrets for me to find. london is lovely. i live on the outskirts, right in the countryside, and the house that we live in, it is like it is out of a fairytale" she said with a fond smile. she liked the house, she just didn't like it's owner. "what about you, mr johnson, how is your life within hogwarts?" she asked, wondering how he found the castle, and trying at the same time to keep the conversation floating by. she didn't want him to leave yet, she was enjoying his company. he seemed nice. Cayden was rather surprised by her answer. Simply because most people would jump at the bit for that kind of power. Then again, he realized that there must be some kind of down side to having her power. That's how everything was. There had to be a balance. Good and bad, right and wrong, smiles and tears, and sound and silence. It's just how the world worked. “Well, that's a good thing. Especially since you wouldn't be the only one who was scared if your powers had no restrictions.” As he said it, he smiled and he thought it came across as a joke. But, even if it came across as a serious comment, it wouldn't matter, because after a moment he realized that was his honest to goodness opinion on the matter. 'yes, of course, you have helped me and i wish to help you in return, in any way that i can' she had said and from her slightly raised eyebrows and the widening of her eyes he could tell she was rather shocked that he had turned down her offer. He supposed that most people would never turn down a favor, simply because it was nice to have someone owe you. A few things did cross his mind that he could ask for, but as soon as they popped into his head, he felt awful for even trying to think of something. He had done what he did because she asked him to and he felt like that was the gentleman-like thing to do. She owed him nothing and he told her just that. “I'm positive that there is no need for you to return the favor. But, thank you for the offer.”
After he said it he felt good knowing that he did the right thing. And then he felt ridiculous and child-like for giving up a perfectly good offer because he wanted to be a 'gentleman' or 'a good boy'. He noticed, after he asked her about her feelings towards her new home, that she put a lot of thought into her answer. So, either, she had yet to make up her mind on her new situation and wasn't sure about how to answer the question, or she was trying to figure out how to word her answer right, he assumed so he didn't get the wrong impression. After another moment or two he was sure that it was the latter. She was trying to figure out how to put it so that he got out of what she said, exactly what she had said, nothing more and nothing less. She was hiding something. But, Cayden figured it was something personal and considering he had only met the girl moments ago he was not going to press her until she let him know what she really felt. He figured if it's worth knowing, and they become friends, she'd tell him later on. 'hogwarts is beautiful, the grounds exquisite, and the castle holding many secrets for me to find. london is lovely. i live on the outskirts, right in the countryside, and the house that we live in, it is like it is out of a fairytale' He smiled, at the very least she appreciated the aesthetics of Hogwarts and London. He, as you well know by know, adored the school and actually sort of took pride whenever someone mentioned it. As if he were headmaster or a founder or something. It was rather ridiculous, but he couldn't help it. “Yeah, there are quite a few secrets around here. I'm sure you'll enjoy figuring them out.” he replied. He wouldn't claim to have found all of the secret passageways and crannys in the school but he sure had found quite a few. “Like you said it's lovely,” he began mimicking her inflection of lovely as he smiled slightly. “It's my home away from home so I must say that I'm a bit biased but, I think it's the best wizarding school in the world and I'm very proud to be a part of it.” Cayden finished rubbing the back of his neck. He probably sounded like a school-crazed dweeb, but he felt like giving his honest opinion.

that's alright because I LOVE THE WAY YOU LIE - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - dominique could see surprise in his eyes, and she knew he wouldn't have been expecting that from her. sure, she was mainly a spoilt brat who got what she wanted, but a lot of the time, she did think sensibly, even if she did usually keep those thoughts to herself. her step father didn't let her get what she wanted when she wanted her whole house built into the grounds. she didn't think it was a bad idea. she'd even decorated it, she had pallets for every area and everything, it would all be white and pretty, light pinks, all nice and cool and open. she'd picked out the colours and the fabrics and the covers for her bed too. she'd decorated it all in her head, and then put it all down on a board, even picking paint colours and furniture. sure, it would cost a bit but it wasn't as if they were lacking in money, they were still quite rich. yeah. she didn't get why he couldn't pay for the conversion, and she was going to ask again, talk her mother around. that would be nice. and she could get away from the crying of her brother. "yeah you can say that. i mean, i'd be scared of it, so i don't even want to think about what everyone else things, yes?"
she said with a laugh, her lips pulling into an honest smile instead of the usual sweet and flirtatious one that she wore. what was it about this meeting that had made her act so..normal? was it the fact that he'd seen her at a low point, and anything was better than that? yes, that was it. he refused her again? was she hearing things? this was something that had not happened before. it was kind of weird feeling, but she was kind of glad. she had too many people expecting things from her, it was nice to have one person that asked for nothing. "well, if you ever need help. i'll help" she said, not really knowing what she should say to that because she'd not heard someone refuse her offer of help before. dominique hoped that he didn't realise that the home she spoke of was basically avoiding what she really thought. okay so she loved the house and all that, but it was the family that was annoying her. recently she'd been feeling more and more left out, especially because of her step father. her mother always seemed to be going off with her step dad to see things, and left dom in the house with her brother. she felt kind of used and trapped there too, as if she couldn't do what she wanted because she was expected to watch her brother. it was like she never even got asked anymore, they just told her, and expected her to be there. that was evil. it was like taking away her freedom of choice. and why didn't they take her with them and hire a nanny? she felt increasingly left out and it angered and saddened her sometimes. "yes, it is very amusing to go and find the secrets. i found a room once, i cannot remember it's floor, but the door, it turned up randomly, just appeared like that. i needed somewhere quiet to go at the time and it was like a personal library. i never found it again though" she said with a sigh, hoping to find that place again some day. maybe there was a way to do work it. she would have to research it, see if there is any proof of it's existence in hogwarts a history. "it is the best wizarding school. it's so pretty and everyone is so friendly. well. most of them are so friendly. some people are biased over house and such but still, i think it promotes a challenge" she said with a smile, glad that they had houses as it meant you were more likely to meet people like you. it also added to the school spirit, brought in an element of competition, and made quidditch games more fun. Cayden could tell that she genuinely meant what she said about being scared of her own power. But, he wasn't sure about the reason. Obviously, there was a downside to it, he knew that, because as was said before, everything good had a downside. He wondered what aspect of it was so bad. The fact that she couldn't tell whether it was her natural charm or the veela charm that attracted guys? Or could she tell? Was it the fact that people would probably do anything she asked simply because of her beauty and nothing else? Or how most guys tried so hard to stand out so she would see how great they were, it was hard to find a guy being himself. He had no idea what the downside was and he was curious, but he decided against asking since it was probably a sort of personal thing and he did not want to invade her privacy or anything like that. He crossed his arms and listened to her as she spoke, watching her lips pull into a smile and listening to her hearty laughter. Cayden felt like he was getting a glimpse at her that other people didn't usually get. Which was good, he was pretty sure that he would be walking out of the owlery with, at the very least, a new friend. He got so caught up in watching her movements that he didn't realize that he had not comprehended a word she'd said. He quickly back pedaled hoping he had heard a bit of what she said so he could reply intelligently and not sound like a complete and total dunce. He did catch her say something about if he ever needed help. “Yeah,” he replied with a smile. “Next time I need help I know exactly who to go to.” Although he didn't think he would ever really take up her offer unless he really needed it. It just felt odd having someone owe him anything. He didn't like the feeling of knowing that someone was helping him because they owed him. He would much rather get help because they wanted to help him with that particular task in that particular moment, if that makes sense.
