Joshua hated the idea of marriage with someone that he didn't love, but even more so, he hated the idea of marriage with Jaslene, if the remainder of their lives would be spent bickering and arguing over who was right, when it clearly would be Joshua. That would be boring, pointless and evil, and he'd rather not wither away like that. He didn't mind the fact that it was Jaslene so much, it was just the idea of married life with her, if they kept arguing like this, it was not blissful. But he could think of nothing, no good reason, no fantastic idea that would lead his parents to bring about an end to this whole marriage idea that was floating around. He did feel sorry for Beth though, as she didn't even know who her spouse to be was yet, but whoever it was, Joshua was sure to give them a good yelling at, just to make sure that they don't dare hurt Beth. Okay, so he was very protective over his sister, and he knew that she was slightly protective over him, thus the reason why they both kept secrets from each other, because the first person each parent would turn to, to learn of the twin's plans would be the other twin, and they would do goodness knows what to get the information that they wanted, or needed, depending on what said information was.
Hate! that was it! His golden ticket, his yellow brick road, his way out of a turbulent and twisted married life! Should she hate him, he couldn't see her dad saying that she had to marry him, especially if she turned up in tears or something. So he had to make her hate him. She couldn't act that well, or at least Josh assumed, and they needed it to be convincing. It was for her own good, so he had to make her hate him. Okay, flirting with other girls, spreading rumours, flirting with girls in front of Jas, spreading more rumours, generally annoying her, and insulting her with evil comments. That was his checklist that he made mentally, now he had to tick all those boxes. "So the wedding dress, are you expecting to pick it, or are you gonna, you know, hire a stylist or something? I mean, they're probably going to force you to go shopping some time soon."
He asked casually, thinking of all the ways that he could turn this into an insult. Sure it was bad, evil and hurtful, but she wanted out of this marriage, and if this was the way, then so be it. But the second that he thought this, he had a nagging feeling in his stomach. She'd been nice enough to him, and the image of her crying because of him presented itself in his head, and he just wanted to comfort her, even though this really hadn't happened. What the hell was wrong with him? She was going to tie him down, and so what if she didn't want to, it was the truth, it was happening, unless he stopped it now. And there it was again, a feeling of guilt when he noticed admiration in her voice as she spoke to him. no, it wasn't admiration, now he was hearing things that didn't exist in her voice. This marriage was already sending him mad! "Oh come on, I thought that you had some sort of puppy love thing going on for Kaleb Garcia, who is, incidentally bisexual, apparently. I mean I would have never guessed, knowing him. Or at least. sort of knowing him" He returned, adding in some gossip, as he wanted to know what she knew on the matter, and what her stance and relationship with kaleb Garcia was. He was also thinking in the back of his mind that maybe he should be worried. Why? She wasn't his, she wasn't sworn to love him forever. She wasn't sworn to love him at all! In fact, the idea of her loving him was preposterous and he doubted that it would ever be possible. Especially seeing as he did need to make her mad and see what else pressed those fateful anger buttons. Said buttons must have been pressed when he was presented to her as her new fiancée. Their parents had gone mad if they thought that these two would make a harmonious couple! They'd look good, oh sure, because he was hot and she was beautiful, though he'd not tell her he thought that, and any kids that they had would be perfect, not that this was ever going to happen. "They've gone off the rocker if they think that anything about our marriage would work. Wow, saying those words, our and marriage, that was wrong. Let's not do that again" He thought aloud, shaking his head to get rid of those words. It did sound wrong, it felt wrong, like they shouldn't be said together, at least not now, whilst there was still a chance that the marriage wouldn't happen and then there would be no marriage to put 'our' after. Yes, they'd get out of it and be free and live happily ever after, not married, and completely happy with themselves and the life that they have. "Maybe they'll grow so big that they won't fit inside the church, after eating all the chocolate, and then they wouldn't be able to be at the marriage, and we could simply say that we'll not marry without them. And bam, we've got us more time at least!" He said with a crooked grin, knowing that his out there ideas wouldn't work in any world, let alone this one. "look I'm only trying to help" He said, slightly dejected at the tone of her voice when she spoke about his chocolate plan. He caught the slight yelp when he mentioned the suicide idea and he laughed a little, shaking his head. "My dear girl you are naive aren't you! I wouldn't really kill myself, just make them believe that to spite them, I would do it, and then they would have to call off the marriage or lose a precious son." He returned, moving closer to Jaslene so that the leaves of the tree could block the light, as the sun had moved over a little since he'd first sat down. So far, it seemed to her, that she didn’t have to make that much more effort, as he already looked pretty annoyed by her line of arguments. If this was happening without her even trying, it was certainly a good omen for her, should she choose to act on her earlier idea. Arguments were fine, if you didn’t expect to spend that much time together, but in a marriage, it wasn’t the best source of communication between a husband and wife. In fact, if a couple were to argue all the time, Jas would personally think them to hate each other, rather than ever wanting to spend their lives together. Surely it was not possible for a couple to fight so much and still be happy? Obviously, having a partner that just went along with everything you said was the other extreme; very few normal individuals would want such an exceptionally compliant wife or husband. What was life without a bit of disagreement? But nobody wanted a spouse who would refute whatever you said, just for the hell of it. It would soon become beyond infuriating. If you were to spend that much time arguing, where was the companionship, the friendship, even the love? None of these important emotions got a chance to participate in the marriage. That didn’t seem normal at all. It was obvious – she could not get married to someone that she argued with constantly.
Having once again successfully distracted herself with the image of herself as a free woman, she was quite shocked when she heard the next words coming from his mouth. Had she been paying attention to what he was saying, or doing, seeing as this question seemed to come from nowhere, so she doubted that anything had been said before, she might have understood his angle better. Seeing as she couldn’t read his thoughts, something that she found herself a little grateful for, she only had his expression and their previous conversation to go on, having little to no interaction with this guy before which would give her any clues. Frowning, she twisted her body ever so slightly to face him, studying his expression, hoping that this action would help her comprehend why he would ask such a question. Although neither of them had asked, as their actions spoke loud enough to articulate their united dislike for this idea, she couldn’t work out why he had suddenly changed the subject to proposed wedding pre-planning. Still with the bemused expression on her features, she forgot that she was supposed to be enforcing her own plan of making him hate her enough to make it impossible for the marriage to go ahead. “Well, I was..”
She began, not really sure how to answer this. “Erm, what..?” While the first question had been surprising, it was nothing next to his next comments. Whatever he had going on his head, she didn’t like it. It wasn’t his change in behaviour; it was more because she could not understand why he was suddenly asking her all these weird things, that he’d shown no interest in previously. Unable to hide her confusion completely, she shot him a glare at the mention of their fellow Slytherin. How was it possible that he even knew about that, for one? It was months before he arrived at the school. So either the other boy had been telling everyone in close proximity, or her future husband had been researching her past activities at Hogwarts. Either way, she was finding it somewhat freaky that he could know about stuff that she could barely recall, in the past. Okay, so the meeting with Kaleb wasn’t that long ago, and she could remember it, but other things, say from her fourth year, if he happened to know about that and bring it up, how was she supposed to respond to or justify that? Not that she needed to justify anything she said or did to this boy. Until today, he had meant next to nothing to her. “Kaleb?” she exclaimed, as though he was insane. She seemed to reacting to a lot of what he said in this same manner. “What’s he got to do with anything? And for your information, Dalton, he means just as much to me as you do.” Maybe it was a bit harsher a statement that she had meant it to sound, but how dare this boy accuse her of something like that? Well, she wasn’t completely confident about what he was insinuating with that comment, but it didn’t sound at all nice. “Maybe you should check your facts in future,” she responded, her arms crossing her chest, in an irritated fashion. “Because I’d hate for you to be embarrassed in the same way as you must be now.” If he thought that she was about to tell him anything about her previous interactions with other people, he was sorely mistaken. Especially if he was going to use that accusative tone. Still slightly pissed that he’d resorted to demanding that she told him everything about her relationships with other pupils, she gave him another sharp look, before sighing, evidently attempting to soothe the abrupt jump of anger that had exploded in her stomach at that point. It didn’t fail to reach her attention that despite her anger, she didn’t make any effort to insult him further, or to even move further away from him. She told herself that there was no point getting angry at this boy, she hated to admit it, but if all of her ideas failed, she only had him to help her and creating a void between them would not solve any problems, rather have the possibility of causing more. That seemed to satisfy the reason why she couldn’t just up and leave. It had to be the reason. What alternative could there be? Still attempting to calm down, clenching her fists to a certain extent, she found that she was being more successful than she would have predicted. Good. As much as she might have hated him at that moment, for those stupid comments, she didn’t need to complicate things. It was complicated enough as it was. Rolling her eyes yet again at his explanation of his chocolate suggestion, she shook her head, thinking this idea was unlikely to ever work. “Personally, I don’t think they’d ever believe it. It seems like such an obvious escape route.” Even if he was right and his parents did have some leans towards insanity, she doubted they’d have raised two children like Josh and Beth, without having some brains. She couldn’t ever envision them falling for such a basic trick. It would clearly have to be more cunning than that. “Well, you’ve got a funny way of showing it,” she replied, unable to forget or forgive him for those accusations, for now anyway. She also didn’t appreciate his tone, as though implying that she was some kind of stupid little girl, simply for showing a sign of caring about his well being. What a jerk. One that she found herself wanting to remain talking to, she stayed still, not even flinching slightly, when she noticed him moving closer to her. Had it been any other boy, she would have probably smacked them across the face for even trying to get closer to her, but she didn’t feel the need here. Unlike them, he obviously had a reason. He wasn’t trying some sad Muggle teenage boy move. Why would he? It wasn't like there was any real feeling between them.[/blockquote][/blockquote] tagged joshua andrew dalton. word count longer than the last one. and the outfit click here to see i have to say aw, you upset little jazzy! It seemed that it didn't take much to make Jaslene mad at him, which was brilliant for him, considering his newfound, and secret, plan. Josh couldn't tell Beth, as she'd probably end up shouting at him for being mean. He knew he could do a lot worse than Jaslene, as at least she was pre blood and pretty, but he didn't want anyone, at all! He was happy being single and having a good laugh at the moment, and he was waiting on someone that he was sure would change the way he saw things to come along. You see, Joshua didn't want just anyone for his wife, he wanted someone who he could be happy with, someone who would make him see the world through brand new eyes, and he wanted someone who could take his breath away with one single look. Okay, so he'd never confided in anyone that he could be so romantic, as that would mess with his Dalton image, but that was what he was looking for in a marriage, and he was sure that Jaslene would never be that girl. She'd not be the one who would make him turn away from his family for her, or the one who could steal his heart with one word. But it seemed that if he didn't get out of this marriage, she would have to be a good wife to him, whether they liked it or not. Joshua couldn't imagine her, standing at a window with a baby on her hip, as it seemed as if it would never happen. In fact, he could see them having a marriage in which both of them would argue against whatever the other one said, just for the hell of it, and forget to do what they were asked on purpose and then claim it to be an accident, and that was no way for a marriage to work, was it?
It seemed, by the look on Jas' face, that what he'd said had not only surprised her, but had confused her and angered her all at the same time, which was a fantastic feat, even for him. Now he just had to pull the rabbit out of the hat and turn this into some sort of insult. Dress. how did she dress? She looked good, pretty, picked clothes that suited her, but if Josh wanted to anger her, he'd have to insult her, and although his conscience was telling him that it was wrong and mean, and he knew it was, he had to do it because of the marriage. He just wanted freedom. He could apologise for everything later, when the marriage was called off, he decided. "Yeah, I mean, you look good now, you seem to have an okay sense of style but I'm sure that you want to look exceptional on the old big day, and you may want help from someone with, you know, uh, better taste?"
Josh asked, coughing slightly at the end of it to hide a bit of a laugh at her reaction. He never thought he'd see Jaslene so tongue tied! okay, this was probably going to earn him a sore ear from shouting or a sore cheek from slapping, or her storming away. He felt guilty as soon as he'd said it, but there was no taking back what was said, unless he used obliviate and that would probably go wrong and cause problems, and he didn't want either of them losing their lesson knowledge so close to exam time. "Although can I suggest that the dress is somewhat conservative, and you can keep revealing clothes until the wedding night, thank you!" He spoke again, sounding pompous and business like, which would annoy her even more, he was sure. Damn this was so wrong, but it was the only way! A fresh wave of guilt skirted over him after he spoke each word. You see, Joshua didn't like insulting her, and he felt guilty after each one, as it wasn't nice, to belittle women like he was, and especially not someone who he may be forced to marry some time in the future, but it was to get out of the marriage, and sure as hell she'd be thanking him for giving her ammunition to pass on to daddy when she went crying to him and he called off the wedding. Because Josh couldn't imagine her father forcing her to marry someone who was as mean as he was being to her, and if Malfoy did force her, then he was crazy, and should be sent to that hospital. He caught the glare at the mention of Kaleb's name, and it was clear that he'd hit the mark when mentioning him, and she clearly hated Kaleb. Well that had been a fantastic shot in the dark! He'd guessed of course, because he'd heard that this boy had been some sort of woman magnet, and surely he would have hit on every slytherin female in his year first, so Jaslene was in that group. What a brilliant guess! And plus he'd heard some sort of rumours about a chair, but he didn't know the specifics. So something had gone on? The way she screeched Kaleb's name was kind of defaning. Wow, could she calm down? "Yeah, that's his name right? I just heard that there was some sort of thing between you, involving him stalking around after you like a puppy, and something to do with a chair. And I'm glad that you think highly of your possible future husband, because unless we get out of this, love, we're stuck with each other" He bit back, running his hand through his hair and slightly hurt that she'd compared him to someone that she seemed to hate. But that was good, right? He wanted her to hate him, it was his plan! "Sorry, I'm not a stalker so I don't know your complete history, sexual or otherwise. And I am not embarrassed. it takes a lot to embarrass me" Joshua returned, in a tone that was equally as biting as hers had been. He'd not expected such a reaction from her, but it was a good sign that she was on the road to hating him, and although a part of him was slightly sad about that, he knew it was for the best. They both wanted an end to this marriage crap, and so he was giving them both a way out. he'd be terrible to her, she'd cry to dad and her father would be so appalled that Joshua could be so mean that he'd call off the wedding and they'd both be free, thus giving them both what they wanted, their life back. He did wonder, though, how many people had the company of his future wife, because he did have the right to know, didn't he? What if she caught something from one of them? Teenagers weren't known for their use of clear headedness in situations that could result in STI's or otherwise. Oh Merlin, what if she'd been pregnant before? How did he know what had gone on in her life? At least he knew that he had no infections or children running around. She seemed to look calmer now, less angry, and a part of him was glad, relieved. What was this feeling? Why was he so concerned about her? It was probably because at the moment, their futures were tied together, and it was in his best interests that she was okay. But they weren't going to marry, neither of them would be forced into that, and they would get away Scott free, as planned. Joshua watched her, her hands clenching into fists, although they seemed to slacken slightly, meaning that she was less mad. He was being more successful than he'd thought at angering her, then. "Well, what else is there? We could obliviate their memories of the whole marriage thing, athough I don't know what else we could make them forget. They may end up thinking that they're spies from the Goblin Wars or something" He joked, throwing in some term that had been mentioned when learning about history of magic in the past, although he wasn't sure if it actually was Goblin wars, maybe he imagined that, or got it wrong. Whatever. When else would such knowledge come into use anyway? "Well I'm sorry that my attempts at an escape fall short of your high expectations. At least I made some" He replied, rolling his eyes again. She'd not suggested anything helpful, at least he was trying! When he moved closer, even though he had good reason, part of him was expecting her to hit him. What else could he do to anger her? well he could pull the muggle arm trick that was always boring and expected and cheesy, but he was in too close a proximity at the moment, and he'd annoyed her enough for her to want to hit him, so it wasn't the best idea ever. He'd wait it out, see what else he could do. [/blockquote] Tagged Jaslene Malfoy ♥ Lyrics damned if i do ya - All Time Low Counted at 1519 Wearing clothes. It was becoming ever more obvious to her that she didn’t know this boy at all. Clearly her previous impressions had been incorrect; he was not as he first appeared. Well, she couldn’t really complain about this. She didn’t know him that well, so the only impressions or information she had was formed of her own opinions. Until now, she’d been confident that her first judgements of a person’s character were almost certainly correct. She’d never been proven wrong before. Mainly because nobody seemed to be able to change his or her personality like he could. Unless he was different, and this was not different in a good way. There was always the possibility that he had some kind of personality disorder, but the more obvious and likely reason was that he was just an annoying person, and he was hiding this with some kind façade. Had this been in public, she would have reacted slightly differently, his changed behaviour towards her was bad enough, because it made her look stupid, and naïve to think that he was a nice guy, but she could not abide people who publicly humiliated her. It was a good thing for both their sakes, that there appeared to be nobody else close enough to hear anything of their conversation therefore.
Her frown returned, as he continued the first remark, which had been the turning point of their conversation. Giving him the chance to explain himself, she decided to stay silent and let him make clear what he had meant by the dress comment. As soon as he had explained it, she found herself wishing that she hadn’t heard it. It was weird, but since that first sudden change of topic, she found herself looking at him in a different way. It was as though the previous time spent together hadn’t existed; because he was not at all like the boy she had been sat next to, for however long. The first part of his statement was the better half, however, because his comments only seemed to get worse. Still, her confusion in this changed situation grew. How could he expect her to ever help him, if he was going to continue to act in this hateful way? Sure, if she was being bitchy, she might have deserved a few comments of this nature, but she hadn’t done anything, yet he’d unexpectedly changed his demeanour. And if she told herself that she didn’t like the Joshua Dalton she was talking to earlier, this one was much worse. Had she been a weaker individual, like a lot of girls her age, she probably would have burst into tears right there and then, but she was stronger minded and as previously stated, she didn’t cry. Let alone for the rude behaviour of a boy like him. She’d never give him the satisfaction. Seriously, she didn’t know what his problem was, but he had better have an amazing explanation for it, otherwise she wasn’t going to remain in her civil mindset.
“Excuse me!”
she inquired, as though she thought that there was still the chance that she had mistakenly taken something perfectly harmless to mean something entirely different. Of course, here, she had every right to be angry. Any girl would be insulted; given the observations he’d just hit her with. It would have been offensive, regardless of who said it, but the fact that he was saying it, seemed to add somewhat more pain to the insult. “I have perfectly good taste, thank you. And if you think I’m going to accept help from someone you know, you’re sadly mistaken.” Before he’d started commenting on every flaw that he thought she had, she might have considered an offer from him, as it was ridiculous to say that she knew anything about tailoring, or wedding dresses, and seeing as her mother away, the only other source of knowledge was her father, who seemed rather clueless to say the least. Despite the hurtful quality of his remarks, she was confident still that he’d never hit her, but with each word, the funny feeling in her stomach seemed to protest harder. It would have probably been kinder of him just to hit her. At least some of the pain would subside quickly, after the initial sting. “And I resent that. I do not dress in a promiscuous style.” It wasn’t just the tone that was hurtful though, it was the expressionless face that he kept throughout, disproving any likelihood that he was joking, or that she had misinterpreted what he had said. It was the tone that he maintained, the same arrogant, distant one, which suggested that he didn’t care for her or her emotions at all. Despite her thoughts telling her that she did not care either, especially as he didn’t, but she couldn’t believe it entirely. Sure, he wasn’t supposed to love her, or want her, or make her happy, but she was still another human being, just like him, and she still had feelings, ones that everyone should respect, regardless of circumstance. Unable to form sentences at this point, the sharpness of each word as it came seemed to flow over her head, with her eyes still focused on his own, still unable to comprehend the sudden change. Just when she thought that she might have lost her voice, she found it again, hearing more accusations. He was going all out to insult her, and she was the one being questioned? It was becoming clear to her that not only did she not understand his actions, but nor could she interpret the behaviour of any people of the male gender. They were all obviously as obnoxious as each other. “I don’t know why you care what his name is,” she said, a small amount of bite evident in her own tone. “It doesn’t matter to you.” She couldn’t say why he wanted to know all of this, but why would she tell him anything and everything about her past, when she didn’t know anything about his? And if he thought that insulting her was going to help her explain her past relationships, he was truly clueless about her. As if she would respond to something like that. “There was nothing between us,” she replied, glaring yet again in his direction. It did not escape her attention that her eyes had not left his own since he’d first altered his manner. “Sure, he was annoying, and we had a few arguments, but he had the decency to treat me properly. At least he never started throwing every insult he could think of in my direction. At least he never pretended to be something he wasn’t. At least he wasn't some sort of misogynistic jerk like you.” Normally, she probably would have responded to his claim of her appreciation of him with a sarcastic remark, but now, she didn’t feel the need to. He could probably see what she felt, just by her mixed expression of anger and confusion. Not that either one of them cared. If he didn’t care, she didn’t see why she should pretend to care. It didn’t help her, so why bother? She couldn’t explain why she was ignoring or disregarding each idea he had either, because it was true, she was really in no position to do so. Maybe if she had the imaginative gene, she might have been able to contribute to the idea factory that he was obviously storing inside his head, but for a while, she had been content to just judge whatever he came out with. “Okay,” she admitted, agreeing with him, despite the ongoing battle in her head, which was struggling to form a straight opinion of him now he’d managed to mess with her head to such an extreme that she couldn’t think as she usually did. This was one of the reasons why she didn’t like him as much as she might have done earlier. Not that she had ever liked him to a great extent. People were either passable or detestable, according to how she commonly processed thoughts about people. For some reason, he still managed to hover between the two variables, despite his poor treatment of her. “How about we strike some sort of deal, where we have a time limit to find a partner for ourselves, otherwise they get their way?” It wasn’t a great idea, granted, but it wasn’t as bad as it could have been – there had been worse ideas. There was also the motive for the pair of them to find someone else, that would comply with their parents’ wishes but also more importantly, make them happy. By now, Joshua was sure that she was probably questioning every thought that she'd had about him in the past few hours, and was probably wondering how she'd gotten him so wrong. Good, because the more she hated him, the more genuine it would all look and then her dad would have to believe her, and put a stop to the marriage, because surely he wasn't mean enough to make his precious daughter marry someone that she thought was a complete jerk, and who actually was a complete jerk to her. He wasn't usually like this, you see, but he needed to be mean so that hate would fill her thoughts about him, and then when she couldn't even stand the sight of him, she'd go and bed to her dad to release her from the marriage promise, and they would both be free. He didn't move his eyes from hers, not once, keeping what seemingly was a cold stare going, but he was honestly just analysing her reaction, watching her, making sure that each comment had it's intended effect. Although each time he said something that hurt her, he felt nothing but guilt and anger at himself too, for hurting her and messing her around like this. it wasn't as if it was her fault, and she shouldn't have to go through this. Damn him and his emotions! A part of him wanted to apologise and hug her and tell her that he'd find a way out that wouldn't result in either of them being hurt, but he knew that if he did so, she'd probably still hate him, or he'd be throwing all that hate away, and having to find another way to get out of this.
But he couldn't hurt her. Joshua couldn't sit there and watch as each comment hit home. He had to find another way, there had to be something else he could do. He had to apologise, because seeing her there, angry and what looked like almost reduced to tears, he couldn't stick it, but he couldn't look away because it was the hard cold stare and the harsh looks that added the illusion of truth to each comment. He couldn't reduce himself to a monster, just to rid himself of this marriage, and besides, he could do worse. She was pretty, funny, smart, and had actually gotten on relatively well with him for the first part of the day, and he wished that they could go back to that, when they were laughing and joking and smiling. But he'd hurt her, and he had to stand up, be a man, apologise, and hope that he could find another way for them to get out of this marriage that didn't involve hurting her. What was wrong with him? He never usually cared so much, but there was something about Jaslene that made him hate himself for hurting her, in some twisted and masochistic way. It was wrong to do this to her, he knew it, but what if it really was their only way out? no, there had to be something else that they could do, wasn't there? This whole marriage business was a lot to think about, and it would surely result in him having an awful headache very soon, no doubt!
Josh had treated her poorly, and she did not deserve it at all. He couldn’t believe that he’d let himself be so rude and mean to her, though she had done nothing to provoke such responses and attitude. He wasn’t raised to do that, and actually could be quite the gentleman, but he hadn’t shown her that yet. In fact, she’d not seen many of his best qualities, and the idea struck him that maybe he should take her out, show her that he wasn’t as bad. He could do it as an apology or something, and hope that she didn’t hate him, and then they could actually work together and do the best they could to get out of the marriage. Meanwhile, maybe they would build a friendship or something, and actually enjoy each other’s company, and therefore be more productive in their ideas out of the marriage because they’d listen to each other better. It sounded like a plan, but at the current moment he doubted whether she would agree to let him within an inch of her ever again, so he’d have to apologise and show her nice Josh again before she’d even think about agreeing. And then if she didn’t want to do then he’d just have to find another way to show her that he wasn’t a monster, it was just the circumstances which had made him think about acting like one. You see if it wasn’t for the both of them wanting a way out, he wouldn’t have tried the hate idea to get them out of it.
But you see, ideas usually sounded better in your head than they did when they were spoken aloud or indeed, put into practice. He didn’t take into account the fact that he’d have to watch her get mad, or see the look in her eyes as she heard each new insult, and felt it cut into her, and he didn’t think that he’d have to see the glare of her when she actually started to hate him. No, he didn’t think it through very well at all. And it was his fault, and he deserved to sit through each agonising look, because he’d made it happen, and now he had to put it right, or else regret it for the rest of his life, and he would, because those looks would stick with him until he met his end, and he couldn’t handle that.
Joshua's behaviour had been rude and inappropriate, and he was sure that she'd noticed the switch in personality. If he explained, maybe she'd understand, forgive him. Why was he seeking her forgiveness? He never usually cared! Maybe it was because his future was tied to hers right now in a way that was unavoidable, until they came up with some plan to avoid it. "I know you have good taste, I can see that. The dress your wearing fits you're shape perfectly, and it accents the colour of your hair, making you stand out and seemingly glow. And before you get any ideas, I am not gay, I just have sisters"
He murmured, rubbing his forehead with his hand and sighing. Well he had to explain now, he couldn't alienate the one person who knew what he was going through, and the only person who could help get him out of that situation, and wanted out of it just as much as he did. She was, in effect, the only person on the planet that understood Josh's need to get out of the marriage, and she seemingly wanted the same thing. "Your right, it isn't my business, I don't have any claim to you, at least not yet" He murmured the last bit, avoiding her eyes for a second. How could he hurt her so much? He picked up his eyes and put them on hers again quickly, before she could notice that he'd looked away, and caught the glare that she was sending him. "I am however, glad to hear that you didn't give in to Kaleb, because he doesn't seem the relationship type. You deserve better" He answered, knowing that as a Malfoy, she would know full well that she could get better. "I'm sorry. Okay? I just thought that if I could get you to hate me, then it would make it a whole lot more believable when you ran to daddy begging him not to marry you off to a pompous jerk." He explained, dropping his eyes to the floor because he didn't know if he wanted to see her reaction quite yet. As her fiancée, he was meant to make her happy, keep her sane, protect her, care for her, and what was he doing in her hour of need? She'd come to him as someone who understood, and he was throwing insults left and right, hoping that she'd hate him enough to beg not to marry him. It wasn't worth it, and he should have been more respectful than that. The words she'd spoken were true, as he had acted like a jerk, and Kaleb would have been a better choice for her other than Josh, but it was him who had the chance to marry her, and it was his duty to watch out for her. They hurt too, those words, although he hid that well, because he wasn't used to showing pain in public. Beth was the only person who'd ever seen him cry, and that had been years ago, and over something silly, no doubt. "That is actually a fantastic idea. I think they'll go for it, as it'll appease us, and then they'll be sure that we won't find anyone that they deem suitable, and we'll be back to marriage again. And if we do pick someone suitable, then it's our problem if we dislike them in the future, correct?" He reasoned with a smile, wondering how she'd thought of that idea. It was becoming clearer and clearer to her that she did not want to be married to Joshua Dalton. Originally, she’d been as naïve and willing to believe that it was simply the idea of marriage that she hated, not actually being married to him. But, if he could be as unpleasant as this to her, would she ever want to be in the same room as him? Not likely. She’d never want to spend the rest of her life with someone who pointed out and accentuated all of her flaws or faults. Some of them were worse criticisms than others, because most were about her appearance, which wasn’t as derogatory as the insinuation that she was some kind of slut. How could he even indict her of something like that? He didn’t know anything about her! Okay, so she might have thought that he was a bit flirty and likely to have slept with countless girls, but she wouldn’t have called him out on it, or shouted these words loud enough for anyone else to hear. She wouldn’t have done it to him. Yet he’d found it so effortless to do that to her and damn all of her feelings, for his own sake. It had started so well, she’d actually started to warm to him a little bit, despite her reluctance, despite the fact that she’d told herself that she didn’t either like or dislike him.
She found it despicable that he’d use of these words against her, to the extent that he’d accused of her of things that had never even occurred to her. She couldn’t even begin to speculate why or how he’d thought of these things to snap in her direction. And most of all, she couldn’t find it in herself to look at his expression anymore. It was like something had died in her, the moment he’d started to insult her, something that she never realised that she had before. . As for him, he was clearly nothing short of a miracle, because she’d never realised that someone could say things like this, and still retain their same untroubled expression the entire time. Obviously he must possess what the stereotypical Slytherin could only dream of - a lack of conscience. What still annoyed her the most about the whole thing was that she still could not work out what he got out of this, other than perhaps his own amusement. And as much as she might have told herself that she hated him right now, she could not live with the thought that everything he had said was purely because he was bored and needed something to entertain him. It was an unbearable thought, and would have been the same detestable thought, no matter who had done this to her.
Honestly, what was up with this boy? He was changing back and forth, without any kind of explanation, without any thought to what it was doing to her, or her mind. She wouldn’t be able to physically cope with any more changes in personality. Sure, one was bad enough, but now he was switching back yet again? None of it made any sense. And now, not only did she feel an overpowering sense of bewilderment, but also an intense sense of indignation. How dare he use her in this way? It didn’t matter what reason he had for doing it; it wasn’t right to treat her in this way, to make her doubt herself. How dare he make her even consider the possibility that she had done something wrong, to think that she might have deserved some of this abuse? And now, he was contributing to another alteration in behaviour, by directly contradicting his previous words? It was beyond perplexing, and she was next to giving up entirely. Ignoring most of what he said, her arms remained in the same crossed position, matching her unyielding expression. She was not about to be nice to him, even if he went back and corrected every horrible remark he might have made. “Yet?”
she repeated incredulously. “With the way you’ve just spoken to me, a one-legged leprechaun would have more chance.” She frowned at his next comment. “And for your information, Dalton, I haven’t given in to any of the boys here. Not that you deserve to know, after that display.” He expected her to be happy that it was all some kind of con, a simple joke? Well, he was obviously as insane as he claimed his parents were. Who would be grateful to be told it was all a joke, when the joke was at their expense? Sure, he’d admitted that he was sorry? What good did sorry do? It was better than saying nothing, and letting her dwell on it forever, wondering what had happened, but sorry didn’t solve everything, did it? Sorry didn’t make up for the pain that was caused by each of those pointless insults. Sorry didn’t make her head go back to normal. Sorry didn’t match up to the dislike that he’d caused, just with a few simple offensive words. Sorry didn’t magically remove all of those unsatisfactory emotions and thoughts that had grabbed her body during those few minutes. Sorry was almost useless, it meant nothing when she’d had to endure all of that for nothing. It had been close to working, maybe, but he’d ruined it by relenting and telling her the truth, so it had cost her mental state of mind, for what? The off chance that it would actually work. Despite all of her indignation, she failed to raise the point that she had considered this exact same escape plan herself. This wasn’t important though, as he’d tried it out and she had not. it didn’t matter at all now, that she had thought exactly the same thoughts as him only about ten minutes earlier. “No, it’s actually not okay. Well, congratulations, because your stupid plan pretty much worked.” It wasn’t a complete lie, but she felt inclined to make him feel just a little more guilt than he had shown throughout the insulting part of his speech. He might claim that he hadn’t wanted to, that he already felt guilty when he said them, but she wasn’t completely convinced. The words seemed to leave his mouth easily enough. Again, with her complaints, about her feelings when he’d practically thrown her well being out the window, during his ‘plan’, she forgot to mention that she could have quite easily ended up doing similar things to his brain. Although she found it easy to convince herself that she would never have gone as far as he did, she would never have wanted to hurt him as much as he seemed to hurt her. It was a weird sensation, why did she care what he had said to her? He didn’t have any other effect on her way of thinking, or how she felt, he wasn’t able to cause her pain normally, it was just that he had changed so suddenly, that she hadn’t had time to prepare herself, to guard her emotions more carefully. Not that it mattered. Like hell way she was letting him close ever again. At least not until he proved that he was actually genuine. “Yes,” she agreed with him, begrudgingly. “It was a good idea. But then it would be, as it was my idea, hence the notable intelligent element.”[/blockquote][/blockquote] tagged joshua andrew dalton. word count shorter than before. at last! and the outfit click here to see i have to say there were tears in my eyes, after he apologised. emotional, much? ;D

Joshua had pushed it too far, he knew he had. He'd not only managed an attack on her appearance, but had also suggested that she was some sort of slut who slept around, and with Kaleb Garcia, which wasn't the best thing to say considering his sexual history. In fact, she probably wanted to get as far away from him as humanly possible, and never wanted to see him again. Which was a shame, really, because she'd kind of be forced to see him again, for example, at the alter. Not to mention the years that they would have to spend together in their married life, should they not find a decent way out of the proposed marriage. For example, they would also have to share a bed, and that would get really awkward, and probably end up with him sacrificing his back and sleeping on the couch, as opposed to getting physically kicked from the bed each night. Now that wouldn't be good for his health. You see, he didn't like the idea of back problems, but he wouldn't force her to share a bed with him if she couldn't stand the sight of him, but he didn't want to spend his life on the couch. Maybe he'd end up sleeping in some sort of guest room or something. That would be better.
It was a shame he had to be an idiot and mess this up, because despite his initial impression, he'd actually started to enjoy her company, and got on well with her, considering how against the marriage and each other they both had seemed to be. But he wouldn't violently murder her feelings to get out of this marriage, because as much as he wanted to escape, he couldn't bear to see the pain in her eyes. Now Joshua had only had this feeling with Beth, as he hated to see her hurt, so why he felt it with Jaslene was beyond him, but he knew that he did, and he wanted to protect her from harm, even though he wasn't doing such a good job at the moment. He wasn't a monster, and though he would push someone to the edge if it meant saving their life, he'd do it, he wouldn't carry out the same process to get himself out of marriage, as there had to be another way. By the reaction on her face, he was sure by now that his personality changes were giving her whiplash, and she deserved a good explanation. But telling someone that you were once willing to sacrifice their feelings to wriggle out of marriage with them probably wasn't the best attempt at an apology, and he had to come up with something better.
Joshua was contradicting himself this way and that, and he knew that the only way that he'd be constant, would be to be himself, honestly and truely himself. Now there were only a few people he'd let his guard down too in the past, and that was Beth and some other family members that he trusted, like Clarke once or twice, although he had to remain strong and watch out for her, so he wore a heavy burden, protecting his sisters. "Your right, and he'd probably treat you better than I have too. I don't deserve you, after the way I've behaved, but I want to show you who I really am, not the monster that I pretend to be"
He returned, laughing mentally at the image of a one legged leprechaun taking her out to lunch. In Josh's quick day dream, when the leprechaun goes to pay, he said something like ahh dangit, someone stole me lucky charms. ye got any cash, lovely? and this image got Joshua laughing inwardly. Wow that was good. "Well thank you for telling me, I didn't deserve to know" Agreeing to everything and admitting he was wrong felt odd, but if it meant that she'd at least listen to him so that they could break out of the marriage alive, then he'd do it. Joshua didn't expect her to jump up and dance when she heard that it was a lie, but he thought maybe she'd sympathise, although he didn't deserve to have her do that. She was in the same situation after all, and it wasn't an idea that he could tell her about beofre hand because she'd be a lot less offended. It didn't matter anyway, because the point was that he'd hurt her feelings, obviously, and ruined the image of him that she'd had before he became a jackass. "Jaslene Malfoy, I will do anything you ask me to, to prove that I am utterly and completely sorry, and that I was wrong, an idiot and that you didn't deserve to be treated like that" Joshua said, turning to her and employing the previously discussed very sexy puppy dog eyes, and a cute smile, that practically begged innocence. He just hoped that it worked! When she said the plan worked, his face fell, and was shocked to find water in the corner of his eyes. Not now, not in front of her! Her tone of voice had hurt, and although Joshua didn't seem like it, he could be very vulnerable, although he didn't do it often, as he always had to be strong for his sisters, because he felt the need to protect them. "We should do it, because sure as hell we'd manage it and then they could eat their words. It 's a brilliant idea, and I'd kiss you but I think you'd kill me" He joked, smiling over at her. One thing was certain from this; it would probably take her a long time to trust him again. She wasn’t sure how long, or why this seem to matter so much to her. She was the daughter of a boy who’d trusted next to nobody, and look where that got him. She wasn’t at all confident that trusting nobody else was a good life motto, but she wouldn’t be trusting of people like him again. There was an obvious risk of her getting hurt, in a similar manner. Except no other boy or girl’s words or looks of approvals mattered to her as much. Apart from her family, and perhaps Chris, she was content to face them with a perfectly civil tone, but not with the same desire for their appreciation. Although the thought of wanting the approval of someone who had the potential to hurt her more than anyone else was ridiculous, and had it not been her in this situation, she would have laughed at the concept. “Well, that wouldn’t be hard to do,”
she stated, in reply to his comment about people treating her better. She didn’t want someone like that though. People that went out of their ways to do nice things for her were irritating in some way. It was hard to describe, but she didn’t like people like that. They were far too eager to please, and it all seemed overly nonsensical to her. His next statements however, were the most surprising things. She couldn’t comprehend these words at all. If he was so keen to get rid of her and the marriage one minute, not thinking about her feelings, why would he care about making anything up to her? “Why?” she asked, raising the tone of her voice, “Why do you care so much? You don’t want me!” Not able to say anything else to that first statement, as she knew it was true enough, she remained silent, chewing down on her bottom lip. She didn’t need or want him to feel as bad as she did, but she couldn’t help but feel that he deserved to have the time to think out things by himself. Yet she didn’t move. Despite his random behaviour alterations, she believed that he was genuine in his words. He seemed slightly horrified that his words had managed to have such a bad feeling on their company. She couldn’t understand this, he’s wanted this, and this was what his plan contained. This was everything that he had wanted. So, if it had worked, why was he struggling to watch her expression? He’d achieved what he wanted, whatever reason he gave the idea, he’d done it and he’d won. Normally, she sensed that he would have revelled in this triumph, but he seemed concerned. Wonders would never cease. But then, was it actually possible for someone to hurt another person like that and not show even the smallest bout of care? Perhaps this regret shown in his face was merely a flicker of that. “Anything?” she reiterated, once again finding his eyes. This meeting must have held actions out of the ordinary for everyone, because usually, she would not have had any issues with thinking of something that he should do, in order to make him talk to her again. But, right now, she couldn’t see the point. “There’s nothing you can do.” she replied, relinquishing hold of her upper body, by letting her arms fall from their crossed position. Well, if there was anything, she wasn’t at all sure what it was. If he thought he’d managed to disturb her with his change of personalities, it was nothing next to the shock shown on her face when she noticed that he looked like he was about to cry. Had it not been for the nature of their conversation, she might have thought that these tears were fake, but she couldn’t think that of him, regardless of what he had done to her. She was more or less convinced that this was a real demonstration of emotion, even if she wasn’t sure which parts of his speech had been honest or not. Panicking slightly more than she should have, given the way he’d caused her to be close to crying herself, although she’d have never cried in front of him, if she could avoid it. It was perhaps a good thing then, for both of them, that he’d stopped with the insults as soon as he did. Biting her lip, so that she was able to prevent herself from doing something she’d regret (although she wasn’t all too sure what this action would consist of), she sighed inwardly. Whatever he’d done to her, whether he or she might have agreed that he deserved to share in a small part of the pain that was still attacking her body, she couldn’t bear him to be in pain as well. It was bad enough that she was. If that made sense? There was no point or benefit for either of them to both become inconsolable. “I didn’t mean it, Josh.” She muttered, obviously disliking she had to admit she was wrong for yet another time in this conversation. “I don’t hate you. I li.. I could never hate you.” Okay, shut up now, Jas. This was dangerous ground. Soon her head would have convinced itself of other weird feelings that would and could never be true. Joshua knew now that he'd ruined any chance of her trusting him again, until he proved that he was worthy of her trust. And he was glad of that in a way, because it meant that he had to try and prove that he was a gentleman, and a good gentleman at that. This was of course clear by his reaction to her pain, as he couldn't stand seeing anyone, especially a woman that he was meant to look after, in pain. He'd do anything to stop it, and he didn't quite understand why, but he did feel kind of protective over his possible future wife. Should she not succeed in ending the marriage. In fact, he'd even take a bout of beatings or curses to stop her from hurting, and that was testimony to the fact that he couldn't witness the pain in her eyes again, whether he understood why or not. You see, Joshua, although he didn't seem it nor show it, could be a very emotional and feeling person, and it was the look in her eyes that had appealed so much to his humanity that he had to stop the plan and explain, because he couldn't stand to see her eyes with pain in them. It wasn't just her eyes, but he hated seeing it in Clarke or Beth's eyes too, because he hated those people he loved being in pain, and would much rather suffer himself, than have them hurt, and he'd proved that in the past, when his parents had tried to get him to divulge Beth's latest plans. But that was life in a pure blood family, though he knew that he'd never let that happen to his children, god forbid that he should have any, and to his wife, should he be forced to be married, and he knew he would, whether with Jas or someone else.
"I know, I've been a suckish fiancée, and I'm sorry. And it is hard for me to say that, and I'm sure that you understand that, considering that it's the same for you."
Josh murmured, not being able to look in her eyes for fear of seeing more pain that he'd caused in them. He somewhat resembled a wounded puppy, but he tried not to look so helpless. He'd never looked this helpless in front of anyone before. Okay, maybe Beth, once. "Just because I don't want you, doesn't mean I don't care about you! Doesn't mean that I don't li- um, doesn't mean that I hate you" He amended, not willing to admit that he kind of got on with Jaslene, because it would add more to their parents idea that it was a good match. They were just on normal speaking tones, where they neither liked nor disliked each other. Yes, that was it. That wasn't a lie. He didn't hate her, he did slightly care about her welfare, and that was clear because he couldn't bear to see that pain in her eyes. "Look, I don't exactly know, okay, but what I do know is that when I said all those pathetic things, I hated myself for hurting you." He murmured, slightly hoping that she hadn't heard his confession. He'd never really told people how he felt unless it was that he was angry at something. Not able to say anything else to that first statement, as she knew it was true enough, she remained silent, chewing down on her bottom lip. She didn’t need or want him to feel as bad as she did, but she couldn’t help but feel that he deserved to have the time to think out things by himself. Yet she didn’t move. Well, if there was anything, she wasn’t at all sure what it was. Joshua couldn't believe that she'd not up and left yet. Surely she was angered and upset by those horrible things he'd said, so why was she not going? Not that he wanted to, God no! In fact, he wanted her company right now more than he ever thought he would, more than he ever thought possible! In fact, the fact that he actually cared about what she was feeling at the moment was more than he could have ever thought possible! He didn't hate her, just the marriage. "Yes, anything. Anything you ask of me, I'll do it, whether that entails me climbing to the top of the astronomy tower and literally singing your praises, or bribing a bunch of first years to hold signs saying that 'Jaslene Rocks! by Josh Dalton' up at the next Quidditch Game, I'll do it" He said with a slight smile at the last idea. Maybe he'd do that anyway, it would be fun to see her reaction. "nothing?" He asked, kind of disheartened. What else could he do or say to show that he did care and didn't mean what he said? "Really? I couldn't hate you either. I tried, look where it got me, eh? I just hate that they've pushed us into this, that's what I hate. In fact, your a pretty decent girl, and i think I could have been lumped with someone much worse for a wife" He said with a grin, happy that she didn't hate him, and actually seemed to be telling the truth. Why was he so happy to have her approval? So, now she was confused. She couldn’t explain or justify many of the major feelings or thoughts that were running in and out of her body. The anger was easily explained, especially compared to some of the other emotions. Anyone would have been slightly annoyed with comments like those said in their direction – feeling somewhat annoyed as a result was a normal human reaction. But she knew that she still didn’t want to get married, regardless of whether she was betrothed to the most appealing man in the world. Of course, this wasn’t to say that she was relenting, and definitely not that she thought he measured up to this attractive image, but she still wanted her life back. Judging by his failed plan from recent times, she guessed that he was still as eager as she was to rid themselves of the marriage, disregarding how well they might or might not have got along. Maybe something good would come of this. Well, not good exactly, but agreeable. She couldn’t see them going back to the way everything had been, despite her head trying to tell her that this was the best way to go about things. How could she let that happen? She couldn’t pretend that nothing had happened. Another part of her did not like the idea of losing the sense of company that she had gained from this meeting. Notably, part of her wasn’t ready to let go.
“I don’t care about what kind of fiancée you are, or have been,”
she answered to his self-criticisms. “If I were excited or even happy to marry you, I might care, but since we find ourselves in a situation that neither of us want, your actions as a prospective spouse that I have never wanted, unbelievingly don’t matter.” It was true, she wasn’t relating his behaviour, while thinking that they couldn’t ever marry if he continued to act in this way, well, she wasn’t thinking of it anymore. His actions as a normal person mattered to her more. Because his actions as himself were more likely to be the honest ones. “But you can stop saying sorry. Any further apologise will just motivate me to hit you, rather than forgive you.” She did appreciate the effort he was obviously making, in trying to express regret and admitting that he might have been wrong, it was the same feeling that she constantly struggled with, being incredibly stubborn. She couldn’t help noticing when he seemed to make a similar mistake, if it was one, and changed his words suitably. Was this why their parents thought the idea would work? Even she could not deny that they shared more than a few similarities in personality. But, if this was true, they clearly were insane. Because everyone knew that it was opposites that attract, right? His words made no more sense to her, than her own had. Maybe it was the fact that they both seemed to stop themselves from saying the words that would be mistaken by others to mean something it did not. “Oh, thanks.” She replied, unable to stop herself from rolling her eyes at his sudden rush of words. “It’s always nice when someone mentions that they don’t want me.” Really, sarcasm? As if that hadn’t shown its head too many times today. This time it just came out, without her noticing, obviously it was just a it was just a well-established habit. “And you don’t know what exactly?” she felt a certain compulsion to inquire as to what it was that he was having trouble making decisions about. Even if it was something completely innocent, and unrelated to this conversation, she wouldn’t have been much use in helping him see more clearly on whatever thoughts or subject matter it was that he couldn’t comprehend as clearly as he wanted. “Well, good,” she replied, unable to manage the usual grateful response of someone who was receiving an apology. It was weird, not only because she’d cared so much what he thought of her, but also because she wasn’t sure how to react afterwards. It was obvious that she was still rather angry inside, but this was masked, to an extent, by her will to stay. Why stay so close to someone who had such potential to hurt her? It made no sense. However she might have predicted that he would react to her admitting that she had overreacted, and dare she say it, that she didn’t mind him that much, despite what he’d done to her, in their first proper conversation, it was nothing close to what actually happened. “I guess that w-whoah,” she would have usually been able to finish the sentence, but he’d grabbed her rather unexpectedly, making her jump somewhat and change what had been a perfectly logical sentence into a sound of surprise. Automatically, her arm flew out, prepared to smack him across the face, but she used her self-control to stop this reflex, just narrowly missing his head. For a few minutes, she felt compelled to shout or whatever angry thing she had going on, but looking at his expression, she couldn’t find the motivation to do so. It was overcome with surprise. Surprise that he’d managed to hug her, without her permission, surprised that he had managed to get hold of her, but the most overpowering thought was of confusion – why couldn’t she hit him? Frowning, she glanced back at him, “You touched me without permission.” She stated, although the quiet tone of her voice made it sound like she might have been talking to herself rather than to anybody else. Oh Merlin, she hadn’t secretly enjoyed it, had she? No, that was absurd. Well if there was one thing for sure, it was that they wouldn't be able to return to how they had been, crossing each other's paths in the corridor and just nodding their acknowledgement. It was odd, but he knew that he could never go back to that, not after what they were going through together. People, he believed, were changed by their experiences, and bound to others by them also, and he sort of thought that thanks to this marriage, should they succeed in their marriage scrapping plans, they would still sympathise with each other on a level that no one else could reach. Now that would be because there was always that chance in the past that their futures were tied to each other, and he wouldn't be able to help but want to watch out for Jaslene, whether he could explain that want or not. And he couldn't, he just knew he didn't want anything bad to happen to her. He told himself that it was just because without her, he wouldn't be able to find a way out of this marriage, and she needed to be in her right mind to come up with decent ideas. Yes, that was it exactly. Besides, if they didn't manage to escape their wedding, then he'd have to make sure she was okay at least, because he didn't want an arranged wife. Hell, at the moment, he didn't want a wife at all! Had this whole marriage thing not gone on, he may have asked her out on a date some time in the future. She'd have said no, but that wasn't the point. At least they would be on better terms then.
If he thought about it, Josh agreed with what she'd said. They weren't getting married, as long as they were still thinking of ways out, so why did he need to set the perfect example of a good fiancée? He didn't know why, in truth, but he felt the need to prove that he wasn't scum, and that the people who had raised him, parents or otherwise, had raised him at least to be a good gentleman, and someone who could look after a lady. He told himself that it was because otherwise she'd spread rumours about him being a jerk, and he'd never find the perfect girl for him. And he wasn't looking for the perfect girl, just the perfect girl for him. He was looking for someone who was witty, funny, liked a laugh, looked good, had great eyes, a nice smile, and made him laugh. He wanted someone he could be happy with, and he wasn't sure if he'd ever find one, but he was hoping that one day he'd be lucky enough to stumble upon her, although that wouldn't be any use if he was already married, because he wasn't the cheating type, and then he'd have to settle for the girl who's perfect for him being his best friend, and that would be awful torture. "Okay. Don't hit me, this face is precious"
He said with a smirk, slipping more into happy and normal Joshua again, instead of the emotional wreck that this engagement had turned him into. It really messed with his head! At the moment, at the back of his mind, he was even thinking that he was feeling things that weren't there, or considering married life if it were to carry on like this. "Your pretty, and I don't think that your as bad as I originally thought, but at the moment, I don't really want anyone! I don't want a wife, I don't want the chance of children. Maybe it's not that I don't want you, I just don't want what they're trying to push us into. Not that I'm saying that we'd get together or anything, I just mean. Well, you get the picture" Josh tried to explain that it wasn't that he didn't want her, he just didn't want the whole package, married life as a whole, wrapped up and tied with a bow for him. He didn't expect to be engaged like this. He expected to come up with some wacky, crazy idea to ask a girl to marry him and they'd have some sort of long engagement, and marry when they were ready. He imagined taking their time, making the most of their time, and taking it slow. Not an arranged marriage that he had no say in what so ever, and neither did he. "I just feel odd about this whole thing. I keep wanting to protect you, I have no idea why. I'm sure that you don't need protecting" He said with a shrug, trying to put what he was thinking and feeling into words. That wasn't the easiest thing to do. Especially if you didn't understand why you were feeling what you were feeling, or didn't understand what you were feeling at all. Joshua flinched as he saw her hand come out, and prepared himself to be slapped, snapping his eyes shut and bracing himself. But when no slap came, he opened his eyes, one at a time, and watched her carefully. It seemed that she'd controlled her response to slap him, and stopped it mid stride. Why? If she didn't like what he'd done, why did she stop herself from slapping him? He'd actually sort of expected it, as she seemed not to like being touched. He was silent, waiting for her to say something, because he didn't want to interrupt her calming herself down and get his head bitten off. He rubbed the back of his neck, and looked over at her. "You want me to ask permission to touch you? As in, like, hug touch? okay then. Sorry about that." He said, with his expression full of surprise that he'd managed to get so close, and confusion of why she'd stopped herself from hitting him, and then there was that little un-obvious little bit of happiness too, though he didn't notice that. Why? Had he secretly kind of enjoyed that hug in a non stalkerish and kind of weird way? No. [/blockquote] Tagged Jaslene Malfoy ♥ Lyrics damned if i do ya - All Time Low Counted at 1023 Wearing clothes. You should know Aww! they're so sweet together! ♥ Credited to me.

Running a hand through her hair, she rolled her eyes at his exclamation, concerning the welfare of his head. “Oh yes, I forgot that I had this pretty little face sitting next to me,”
she replied, shaking her head, but a small smile visible again on her own face. Truth be told, she wasn’t sure that she was being sarcastic. Her sarcasm seemed to have run off with some form of sense that was clearly missing from her mind, when she couldn’t act as she normally did. This wasn’t to say that the girl talking to her company wasn’t Jaslene, because this would have been an illogical claim, but merely that some of her thoughts and feelings that she had never realised that she had were appearing, in place of characteristics that she thought would never leave her in the midst of a conversation about matters of vital importance. Go figure. “I’m not sure you’re actually helping yourself here,” she commented, whilst fighting some strange urge to laugh at his attempts of making her like him again. No, not like, but think enough of him to be civil to him once again. “It might just be better if you stopped.” As much as she appreciated him admitting he was wrong, he was becoming dangerously close to saying something else which stood the risk of hurting her feelings again. Although were it to happen again, he wouldn’t have meant it, but still, she couldn’t see herself wanting to put herself through more of this, if he hurt her once more. Saying that she was attractive, even if she hadn’t been expecting him to say anything like that, was all right, but when it was followed by ‘I still wouldn’t want you’, it wasn’t as flattering as the male gender might have believed. Not that she cared if he wanted her or not. It wasn’t like they were a couple, and he was supposed to want and love her, or even that she liked him. No, none of these applied to their relationship, so why was she bothered whether he said that he could ever want her or not? Obviously it was a matter of pride. There was nothing else that it could have been down to, so it was evidently just her sense of pride, if other boys liked her, why shouldn’t he also concur to this impression of her? It didn’t mean that she would want him, or anything like that. It was just ego. Well, she had to hand it to him, he was one of the first males in a while to realise that she was capable of looking after herself. She had never been able to figure out whether it was just the fact that she was a seventeen year old girl that made every boy around her feel this overwhelming need to protect her (since she was obviously incapable of managing this by herself), or whether it was something to do with her actual personality that made them think that she needed someone to look after her and care for her. Maybe it was because they figured she’d be lacking in a bit of these, what with her mother seemingly wandering off never to return again. Still, she did like the fact that he had recognised that she was more than able to look after herself; it was a change of opinion to the ones that seemed to be following her around at the moment. She hoped that his words had helped him to see how he felt, because she didn’t understand much of what he said. It all seemed rather vague, and lacking in details. If she couldn’t understand how she felt, she failed to guess as to how she was supposed to tell him how he was feeling. She also didn’t want to divulge her feelings, because they were so odd, that she couldn’t live with the thought of saying something and then regretting it. It was brave of him to try and explain how he felt, but she wasn’t about to follow suit, unless she had reason to. The pair of them seemed just as puzzled by her lack of normal reaction. It was sort of an unwritten and highly respected law that she wasn’t to be touched. “Yes..” she answered slowly. “But then why would you be touching me in any other way, Joshua?” She raised an eyebrow at this point, unable to stop some of her suspicious nature creeping into this tone. Sure, it was evident in what other ways he would want to touch her, had they been married, or even in a relationship, but they were currently in neither, and had no wish to be, so what other kind of touch would she have been talking about? Although saying these words still felt strange, as though she didn’t mean them as much as she usually would have. But then, she’d already prevented herself from hitting him, which he was undoubtedly thankful for, as shown by his flinching movements, so she couldn’t let on that she might not have minded this sensation as much as she made out. Coughing, as though to cover some embarrassment, she began to speak again, “Yeah, anyway, as I was going to say before… before that,” A small pink tinge creeped across her pale face, as she struggled to think of the words. In her confusion, she’d managed to forget what she had been meaning to say. Damn. Joshua watched her run a hand through his hair, and smirked at it. It was odd, seeing one of his habits being carried out by a girl. Not that they couldn't run their hand through their hair or anything, he just didn't expect her to do it, was that odd? You see, they were more alike than they were willing to admit, both with habits and with personality. Both liked a challenge, and neither liked to lose, although that was common anyway. Both of them always expected to win, and neither of them was willing to admit defeat. They both controlled their movements and their words well, usually, and neither did something unless they knew what they were getting out of it, or that they were getting something out of it. Or at least, those were the qualities he picked up on, but he wasn't going to admit that they were so alike, in case it would add fuel to the fire that his family had started. Besides, wasn't it meant to be that opposites attracted? Josh noted the smile tug at the corner of her lips. "How did you manage to forget? I mean, my face tends to be one that's remembered"
He said with a grin, glad that some of the tension was gone for now. Josh was surprised that she'd managed not to laugh at his poor attempts at a reconciliation, becuase they were pretty poor. And seemingly un finished and confusing too. Wow, he should really try and make more sense, because thinking and talking at the same time didn't always work for him. Which was probably not such a bad thing because he rarely said what he was thinking unless around Beth or Clarke. He'd always sensor his thoughts around others so that they didn't get some ideas about him that were silly and wrong. You never knew what could be said about you at Hogwarts, although saying that, how long would it be before people knew that he and Jaslene were engaged? not long, no doubt, if that runt, Snyder, the school gossip, had anything to do with it. She seemed more free too, it seemed, more natural and care free, despite the obvious care that she was in an arranged marriage. No one could forget that at a moments notice. "It was worth a try. I'll shut up now. But I wasn't lying." He answered with another grin, wondering how he could be grinning like a Cheshire cat in the sun when he was possibly going to be married soon. He needed to stop thinking about that because they'd get out of it. Joshua knew that Jas was capable of looking after herself, just by the composure she'd kept after finding out that her life was being practically taken away from her and forced in a direction that she wouldn't otherwise take. She looked strong, thoughtful, as if she knew what was going to happen, she understood it, and she knew that fretting and crying wouldn't help. He admired that, because he'd possibly, maybe, definately cried when he first heard the news. Okay, he'd shouted a bit first, and then went to his room and cried a little. He couldn't help it, because he thought that he was being once again controlled by his parents (which he was) and that his future would be inevitably tied to another person who he probably didn't know. (almost, because he did know her. basically). Just because he knew she could look after herself, it didn't stop the want to protect her though. That was odd. He'd never felt such an overwhelming desire to watch out for someone when he'd literally just met them, especially if they weren't family. He did feel protective over his family, cousins included, and he wanted to catch up with them all soon too, see what was going on with them, take his mind off the marriage. Maybe he'd try and see Beth later, and then Arthur, he could find Arthur around somewhere, or get someone to go get him from his dorm. Yeah, that would be good, he'd like to catch up with them. He did love them, although he didn't tell them that much, because he didn't need them thinking he was soft. He needed to be strong for them all, and now for Jaslene, just in case she wanted help. Not that he expected her to ask, because she seemed very proud. The both of them seemed just as confused at her reaction. It was kind of odd, and Josh had expected a nice slap in the face at best, and at worst, a kick in a place that would stop him from having kids. "It was just a hug, Jaslene, it doesn't mean that I'm about ready to drag you to bed. But if your offering" He joked, grinning at her to let her know he was kidding. Was she expecting him to touch her in any way at all? Like, innocent or otherwise? Well, if they did get married, then he'd have to, because he wasn't living forever without sex, that was just preposterous, and he doubted that she would either, so the only conclusion that he could draw was that they'd have to be together anyway, or remain perpetually angry people who could take the vow of chastity and it would make no difference. And that was not what he was looking for in a marriage. "Yeah, uh, carry on." Josh said, waiting for the end of the sentence, but it seemed that either she'd forgotten, or she was struggling with how to word it. He guessed that the hug had taken her off guard, as it certainly was a surprise to him! He still didn't get why he did it, but whatever, at least he could say he'd survived a hug with Jaslene Malfoy and lived to tell the tale![/blockquote] Tagged Jaslene Malfoy ♥ Lyrics damned if i do ya - All Time Low Counted at 985 Wearing clothes. As if he hadn’t done enough to mess with her thoughts, he was now managing to do it again, although she doubted that he meant to that, it was still making her doubt what she’d already convinced herself of. Now not only was the whole thing, the whole situation becoming just as strange as the idea that they should spend their lives together, but she was getting odd thoughts herself. Thoughts that should have never occurred to her. And what was more, she was sure that he was giving her weird looks. Like his smirk. The one that she had never witnessed being directed at her before. And what was that for, anyway? She hadn’t even done anything! Giving him a look which clearly demonstrated her kind of ‘what the hell are you smirking at’ mood, she watched him grin at something that was evidently extremely amusing to him, but not so much to her. Well, she wouldn’t be doing that again in a hurry, whatever it was. Hopefully, he’d explain what he found so funny about her reaction, so that she could avoid giving him something to laugh at. Honestly, it was a nice laugh, but she didn’t like the idea of him laughing at her, unless she found it funny also. “I guess you don’t have a memorable face. Don’t worry, I’ll work on it.”
Wow, was that a sense of enjoyment creeping into her voice there? Weird. Had the situation been funny, she probably would have laughed at his babble of language that seemed as though they were meant to comfort her, or in some way make her feel better. But, as she peculiarly had to keep repeating to herself, as though she would have forgotten if she hadn’t reminded herself of the future, this situation wasn’t humorous, regardless of her feelings for whoever else happened to be involved. She nodded, smirking at his apology. Seemed that he’d be doing a lot of apologising for the time being, until he was convinced that she’d at least partially forgiven him for his changes in behaviour. She might have still hated a small part of him for insulting her, but it was far less than she had hated him in the last twenty minutes. So, by her standards, he was doing quite well, even if she hadn’t completely forgiven him. But, it was to be expected. Nobody would be able to talk to her like that, no matter who they were, and how she might have felt about them, without consequences. It wasn’t realistic for her to forgive him after a few minutes of laughing and pretence as thought none of those words had been said. But, she had to admit; he was also succeeding in this area. Against her will, she felt that eventually he’d be able to gain her pardon and her trust again. Why was he torturing her in this way? Okay, torture wasn’t the right word, but how was he able to make her feel weird with a single look, or so few well-chosen words? “I did recognise that it was simply a hug,” she replied, without a moment’s hesitation. It did raise the question of how things would progress, if she were so unwilling to have people make contact with her. But, to be fair, if her idea worked, they wouldn’t ever have to face the problem, so it really didn’t matter. Besides, it wasn’t that she was against anyone touching her; it was that she had to trust them entirely and want them to be near her, before she’d let them. It wasn’t that she hit people for the sake of it, or because she enjoyed it. It was also to do with the sudden way that he’d grabbed her, she didn’t like people creeping up behind her either. It was a rational enough dislike. “I’m not saying that you’re never allowed to touch me,” she began, hardly daring to believe that she’d admit this out loud, and to him, of all people. “I’m just saying that it would be nice to have some warning, before I like faint or something.” Alright, so that was highly unlikely to ever happen, but she doubted that she would have objected to many other people, if she was aware of what was about to happen. “And as much as I’d love to, I’m sure that it wouldn’t help our cause in the least,” she answered, with a rather sarcastic tone to her reply. It wasn’t a bad cynical tone however, more a vaguely amused sarcastic tone, if that was possible? It was true, she didn’t need to end up even more perplexed, and neither did he. Of course, neither of these applied, as his tone made it clear that the offer had been a joke; anyway, she was uncertain that he would have risked it, even if he had meant it. If he’d flinched after giving her a hug, he probably thought any further attempts to get closer to her would result in murder. It had to be a bad sign that she’d even thought about it though. She didn’t need or want those types of thoughts in her head. It wasn’t helping with anything, let alone with the strategy that she planned to enforce, in order to avoid having to get married to a man that she had not chosen. The thing that definitely hadn’t helped though, hadn’t been what she’d replied with, or even the thoughts running through her head, but the reaction that his comment had on her. Now while blushing wasn’t a crime in itself, it was a criminal offence for her hormones or whatever other chemical things to create such a pink flush to her face, when she blatantly wasn’t bothered by what he had said. That just wasn’t needed at all. And it gave the wrong impression. Rubbing her face, in an effort to rid herself of the slightly warm feeling that had overcome her, she frowned at his encouragement. “I was just wondering who you would choose to be your wife.” She continued, a brisk unworried tone apparent throughout the question. This was odd. Not bad odd, but good odd, in a very odd way. That was a whole lot of 'odd's for one explanation! The meeting itself, it seemed kind of calm now, easy for him, and he wasn't really looking to leave any time soon, although he knew he would have to, as hours were disappearing, and he wanted to go and see his family suddenly. He just had the urge to be around them, which was odd because he didn't usually do that, but it was easy to understand at the same time because he'd gone from almost always being around them to hardly seeing them. For example, he'd barely spoken to Arthur since they had arrived at the school. He smiled lazily, looking around the grounds at the few students that had dared to wander over to sit by the lake, although noting that the tree was taken, some had sat down on the grass instead, and some had turned and gone to find another spot to sit in, where they could be comfortable and in the shade. The day was progressing too fast for his liking, and he'd learned a lot in the last few hours, and most were things that would effect his future, so he had a lot to take in and contemplate. Josh glanced over at Jaslene, noticing an odd, 'what the hell' look that he usually wore. "I'm sorry, did I miss something?"
He asked, in response to the look she was giving him. What was she thinking about? "Well, if we don't get out of this, you'll have plenty of time" He returned with a shrug, keeping the same, lazy smile on his face. Despite the completely serious and odd situation that they had been put in, his mood was odd, contemplative, but of one that at the current moment was 'i don't care'. He did care, obviously, but he was giving himself a break and wasn't about to give himself a headache because he was thinking about the complex implications of marriage. Namely that forever was a long time. Although if it went quite as fast as the day was, maybe it wouldn't be so bad. Maybe. Of course they'd make it out of the marriage! both of them were smart, cunning, and able to pull a plan together, so they would do just fine. He could tell that although his apologies were working slowly, they seemed to be working, as she no longer had the biting tone of voice, and she seemed a little more relaxed. He didn't doubt that it would take a while to get her trust back, because you couldn't go around insulting Jaslene like he had, and speaking to her in that way, and then expecting to be scott free and laughing after a few minutes of apology. Oh no, she'd probably draw it out and make him earn her trust again, which Joshua agreed with, as if he earned it, then he deserved it more, surely. And if he deserved it, then he wouldn't be so quick to hurt her and squander away his hard work and her trust for something stupid, or something that he couldn't go through with. Rubbing her face, in an effort to rid herself of the slightly warm feeling that had overcome her, she frowned at his encouragement. “I was just wondering who you would choose to be your wife.” She continued, a brisk unworried tone apparent throughout the question. "Just checking that you knew that I wasn't attempting to assault you. My, Emotions got the better of me, that's all" Joshua summarised, not quite sure which emotions had exactly got the better of him, but they had almost risked his life. Why was he thinking of the other possible meanings of the words, touch? Oh, of course, he was a teenage boy who's hormones were more prominent than any other part of his personality, and he certainly sometimes wanted to follow them, more than listen to his sense. Wow, he really needed to stop thinking about the other meanings of that word, because soon enough he'd have a whole other problem, next to the marriage one, and that most certainly would result in questioning looks and possibly his death, if Jaslene was the one who noticed it. Thankfully, he clouded his mind with chairs and books, and other boring stuff, and managed to hide his hormones away in a store cupboard. He raised his eyebrows and thought that he was hearing things after what she said. Did she honestly mean that? He wasn't about to test that theory any time soon. "Well, in fairness I didn't even give myself warning, but I will provide it in the future" He said, keeping the lazy smile from before.
